Asked for ID to by paper!

So, i was in supervalu today getting some stuff. I went to the express counter cos i had to buy some rizla. The girl serving me actually asked me for ID. I repeated tobacco PAPERS. She kept asking for ID. I was getting frustrated as i didn't have any on me and wasn't going to go out to the car to get my license over this. I was more annoyed as to why she was demanding ID for some pieces of paper. I thought she missunderstood what i wanted.

She asked the manager to intervene and she explained that they need to ask for ID for tobacco and tobacco PAPERS. I told her there must be a mistake as they wouldn't be doing anything illegal by selling something that doesn't have tobacco in it.

I told her it was ridiculous and she agreed but said they could lose their license over it and the girl serving me could be fined 3k for selling me the papers. She told me to take it up with the authorities if i had a problem :rolleyes:

The two guys behind me couldn't stop laughing and offered to buy them for me

My mate who was in the queue was also declined them (he's about 32) because the girl said he could have been buying them for me. Was that even any of her business?:mad:

I'm actually 24 and don't even look 18 and i wouldn't have minded if it was tobacco or cigarettes i was buying but it was papers. It's like refusing wine glasses to someone without ID.

Bloody ridiculous IMHO but there must be a law regarding it or they wouldn't have made a fuss about it.

Does anyone know?

in toronto you need id to buy anything related to tobacco smoking, including papers. perhaps its something new thats been introduced as supervalu policy?

I think it had something to do with the fact that no matter how small the scissors it could potentially be used to stab someone to death. And you can only do that if you're over 18.

I remember being asked for ID to buy spray glue. Normal glue, yea, you could go sniffing it, I can understand that one, but spray glue? You'd have to be really stupid to spray that up your nose, and if you are, you deserve the consequences.

Apparently the lighters are fine all the same:

Hate that thing too. I was in lidl a few months back and was buying some vodka. A younger fella asked me for the time while i was in the queue and and the girl wouldn't serve me because she thought i was getting it for the fella who i had never seen before. Took almost 10 minutes to get the manager down and explain that i hadn't a fúcking clue who the fella was.

Few years ago I was buying spoons in tesco and I was asked if I was over 16! Apparently they don't sell spoons to under 16s...

Just smash the bottle of vodka on the ground if you forget your ID next time, they wont charge you. One time in tesco Roselawn, myself and friend went in at 2 in the morning and downed 2 cans each while picking up munchies, we got the beer for free because it supposed to be closed off after hours.

I got ID'd in Tesco a few months back (I was chuffed at the time, haven't been ID'd in years.) Didn't have any on me, I said I had my licence in my car. Said they didn't accept licences as ID. I said, "Good day" and left.

Thats how a grownup deals with that sort of thing.

Thats ridiculous. Even more ridiculous: My friend (who might've posted here already) was buying ice-cream and spoons in tesco and got asked for ID to buy the spoons. Apparantly you have to be over 16 to buy spoons in tesco just in case you might be using them to do drugs. Madness!

I would have wasted my time going out to the car so:( It's ridiculous. She did ask if i had Guarda ID. I got that when i was 18 and what a useless piece of card that was. A licence or a passport should do. It's their problem if they aren't able to spot forges.

I get ID'd all the time when I'm buying smokes but never when I'm buying drink. Its great getting asked when you have ID on you but I hardly ever carry it on me. At 24, I thought I wouldn't have to worry anymore... :rolleyes:

I think Tesco are the strictest for asking for ID. Im 25 so dont have an age card. The only ID I would ever have on me is Drivers License and have been refused drink there.

Yes will have to remember my passport in future but dont like bringing in out with me when I can avoid it.
