Heard someone on a radio saying we should haggle in shops now with the recession

I saw a shirt marked 35 euro and was going to offer 20 to see the reaction /hopefully get it but no staff around and probably be told to foxtrot oscar

Was in PC World today looking for two laptops for Santa presents for my little brother and sister. Shop assistant came over and we asked to speak to the manager to see if he could do us a deal on two laptops. Manager point blank refused to come anywhere near us!

I would in a market, or with the lads going around holiday places in other countries, I love doing it.
But I wouldn't do it in a shop, the same way as if I was working in a shop I'd feel uncomfortable if someone tried to haggle with me.

Not a good start, even if they had been willing to haggle.

I wonder if the revenue have a haggling policy; I feel the services we get are worth a lot less than we pay for them.

Sometimes. I bought a shirt recently and asked for a discount on a pair of cufflinks and I got €15 off.

It won't hurt if you ask. You never know, you might get lucky.

Shouldn't be that difficult. They'll either say no, or go look for a manager.

Or else just ask if you can speak to a manager from the outset.

Okay the trick is dont go into the butchers and ask for say sirloin steak, what you do is if you want the sirloin steak you say can i get 5 euro worth of sirloin steak and have the 5 euro in your hand as if thats all the money you have, they will weight it and usually it will come to 6.50-7.00 they will usually give it to you for the fiver instead of cutting it up, if you want mince meat or a stir fry in the butchers then you really hit the jackpot as usually they wont just keep taking the meat out until it gets to the said 5 euro, with mince and stirfry i usually get 2 euro free:D.
For the takeaways well i only do that when im drunk at night, id go into the takeaway and say the chips cost 2.50 id say can i get 1 euro worth of chips, most of the time they will give me the regular portion but it doesnt work in every chip shop, i usually have to try 3 before i hit the jackpot:P.

I work in a clothes shop, we are given no authority to reduce prices. It gets really annoying and uncomfortable when people ask, it isn't fair on the member of staff, if you don't want it at the marked price then piss off and find it at a price that suits you elsewhere. A guy today was buying 3 items, he knew the prices of these items having spent 45 minutes trying them on and by the look of him and the wife he wasn't short of a bob or two, he waited until I had scanned and bagged the items and given him the overall price to say 'what's the best you can do for me?'. THE PRICE I'VE JUST TOLD YOU YOU JACKASS. Sorry for the rant but I've been in various sales jobs for 4 years and people don't seem to realize that prices are set for a reason, it exhausts me

Also loss leaders. Not everything a shop sells is at a Mark up price you know. Some are just sold to cover the overheads of a shop.

I didn't know people haggled for clothes? Only ever seen people do it for electrical items. I'd only haggle myself if I was buying something ridiculous overpriced and new a cheaper alternative nearby as most places price match or if I was buying something was a display item or pre-used.

i just tell the taxi driver i only have 20e and they usually drop you home and you can save like 3-4e. the butcher on the other hand would probalby just get me a smaller steak.
