Maybe related, maybe slightly off-topic? ...but I note that Waterford County Council seems to have an obsession with Rosslare. Down near Lemybrien and Dungarvan there are signs that say N25 Rosslare and don't even mention the city... WTF???

Normal practice is to always have the terminal town for the route on the sign, in this case Rosslare. Other towns may be added to the sign too.

After seeing the size of the crowds on The Quay waiting for the free buses to the bridge, I took a different route and took a few photos for those of ye not in these parts. Weather is bad, sorry I couldn't scrub them up more!

Note that the last photo was taken while crossing the bridge towards Rosslare. As I mentioned in another forum, until the M9 to Dublin opens, you'll have to exit left at the Grannagh interchange, go around that interchange to the right, go in as far as the Newrath roundabout, around that and then back out the existing N9.

could you not exit the r/a at the limerick road exit, turn left opposite the thatch under the flyover for the brige (near Ferry Bar) and turn left again onto the N9?

Think that was mentioned previously. Just seems to be for local traffic only. Looks to be not open yet either. They might not open it til the M9 opens, might be too much of a risk/temptation with the low bidge and narrowness of it.

My favourite is 1803 - great shot of the bridge on approach.
My least favourite is the sign pointing us to the Grannagh interchange for Dublin! Roll on the M9 to Danesfort!

Well my brother and myself went down to use the new bypass after work today at 5pm and it wasn’t open so we parked our cars at the temporary road block (Murphy contractors John Deere and a trailer) at the new Kilmeaden roundabout at the Cork end of the road.

I was first in the queue along with a Taxi van and my brothers car was behind me. The Garda put me into the RHS lane and the Taxi into the LHS lane. It opened just after 6. We had a Garda motorbike escort infornt at 60KPH the whole way. At the toll as we have tags we went through the express lane to the right of the toll. Being use to the M1 toll we didn’t really slow down and subsequently passed the Garda on the motorbike. The car behind my brother’s car most have thought that the express lane was opened to everyone and subsequently crashed and broke off the barrier as he had no tag.

Hilarious! (He didn’t stop).
Anyway the Garda motorbike passed us again just before the bridge.
What a day for Waterford and what a bridge!

I drove the bypass today from end to end, and then back again!

I started out at the Kilmeaden roundabout. It was getting dark, but there was still enough light to give us a great view off the Whelan's Bridge viaduct. After that was that wonderful downhill-uphill bit in wellbutty's picture 3c (post 250). That was a lovely stretch to drive - really fun actually!

After that was the exit near the Waterford Manor. I stayed on here, and it got very busy all of a sudden with city traffic heading across the river. I could just about see the river out on the left-hand side.

The toll plaza was great. I didn't realise that there was an express lane for tag holders, so when I saw it, I breezed gleefully through!

The bridge itself is spectacular, but there were still quite a few people who didn't quite know what they were at. One guy was just sitting asleep in the overtaking lane at 40 km/h

It was very busy on the northern section too, and I get the feeling that the Luffany Roundabout (where the bypass ends north of Slieverue) is going to be extremely busy in the future.

I turned around at this point. The bridge is even more spectacular coming from the Kilkenny side. I got off at the Grannagh Interchange so as to explore the stretch of road leading down towards the Newrath Roundabout. It's a lovely banked slalom road - great fun to drive!

Back onto the autobahn again and once again whizzed through the toll. One thing I couldn't get over was how close the westlink exit is to the bridge and toll plaza. You pay the toll and then you're practically at the exit. A couple of roundabouts and you're down at B&Q/Harvey Norman. Kudos to whoever decided on putting three lanes leading onto the Old Kilmeaden Road roundabout - one left for Cleaboy, one for straight on and the third for straight on/right. That will help traffic at what will now be a very busy junction in the mornings.

I imagine the whole bypass will be great for all the Kilkenny and Wexford people working on the west side of Waterford. The toll of €1.90 is a bit much twice a day, but the time saving is unreal. I started my first run from Kilmeaden at about 6.15 and was over at Slieverue before 6.30. Sometimes it could take that long to get down the Quay at rush hour!

We can complain about how long it's taken, but for once, we have a top-class piece of infrastructure in Waterford. I'd have a few quibbles about some of the signage, but all in all... WOW!!!
