If you've got the appeal that a station programmer is looking for that he/she feels will sound ok on their business then you'll get played. Secondly, a lot of it is loud, heavy, shyte that isn't suitable for a lot of stations - particularly hit music stations. Why does someone that tunes into the likes of the stations mentioned already in this thread want to hear a new Irish band they've never heard of? The answer is they don't. I am the head of music in a large Irish station and only yesterday met the Shoos after playing them for a couple of months, they couldn't have been more grateful for the support - just one example. What's more if you hate the Coronas, there's 100 other people that love them, if they were getting no airplay and deemed "cool" then you would probably like them, being a victim of your own success happens a lot in this country as once you do actually make it you're a 'sell-out' of some sort. I hear Phantom constantly doing their bit for Irish music, I hear uncovered unplugged gigs on many radio stations, but these Irish bands don't keep the stations afloat - the new single from Lady Gaga or Kings of Leon does. Maybe a lot of people don't understand the job of a radio station - to appeal to the biggest amount of audience you can to make the most amount of money you can. That's it, in a sentence. Your typical fan of Irish music that doesn't stretch as far as the success of the Coronas or The Blizzards probably doesn't even have the likes of 104, 98, Spin preset on their radio so why would stations even bother to try draw them when they know they won't be able to survive by playing the songs less people demand and dropping the ones they do want to hear in return? Just giving you the look of the world from inside.
