Hate the English??

Do the irish people really still hate the english or is it only on sporting occasions that the wrongs of the past come to the surface.
I only ask cause one of the lads in work (he's a dub) was always giving out about the "fcukin english" - bit strange i thought as he sat there talking about how much he detested the english when he was wearing a manchester united jersey?

He's not the only lad i've met who seems to heve a hatred of england and all things english - have we moved on or is it still acceptable to harbour a long standing grudge against our near neighbours?

Many Brits and Yanks, Aussies, ki-wi's will dislike the Paddys cause were annoying pis*heads while drunk, but disliking the Brits cause they're merely annoying is a ridiculous claim??

Don't hate the English, but generally I think there is still a bit of resentment towards British people in general for not just the whole 800 years thing, but more recently what happened in the North, and also how they looked down on the Irish for so long and took the piss out of us. That went away when we had a booming economy but its starting to come back again now that our economy has gone to sh*t.

I do hate the British establishment though, i.e. the British government and the British monarchy. I have no respect for any government/head of state that rewards it's forces for maiming innocent unarmed civilians.

I think as long as partition remains, and until British rule ends in all parts of Ireland, then that general resentment towards the Brits will stay there.

I don't hate the English, we can't forget our history either at the same time and yes the English played a big role in the famine as Ireland was a net exporter of food during one of the worst famines in history, or the fact Irish people were shipped off as slaves to the Caribbean or we had penal laws in an attempt to assimilate us to be like the British.

We had Tony Blair apologise for the famine, some put it in the genocide bracket.
The British government refused to co-operate with the Irish government over the Dublin/Monaghan bombings where collusion between the British army and loyalist terrorists is the reason why....

We shouldn't hate English people, we should be able to discuss the things mentioned above but you can't hate people who had no part in it. English is such a generalised term for the group of people involved as many English people had nothing to do with the examples I used such as the famine, penal laws or collusion with terrorists.

I never once said i hate English.But you can see how the reaction is because i reminded them of what it is all about and why still alot of people say they hate the English.They are very quick to spit on their own but they forget what was going on in Ireland with the British terrorists who might i add had alot of support in Britain.

Correct me if I am wrong but was it not the Normans from Normandy that invaded Ireland, at the request of Dermot McMurrough the then King of Leinster. If so is it not the French we have the argument with and not the English who nowadays, for the most part are a very pleasant and friendly nation. ( makes note to stop having holidays in France- well Normandy anyway !!! and dont drink Calvados)

On the subject of monarchies how is it that some of Europes best nations have held on to the Royal Families and are very proud of them ? Norway,Sweden and Denmark are model countries in Europe and have Royal heads of state,The Nederlands and Belgium also good examples and it is not so long ago that Spain restored its monarchy after having a bad time as a Republic.

Agree with your general point but William the Conqueror invading Ireland is a bit much? William died in 1087 and the Norman Invasion lasted from 1169–1175 resulting in 8 centuries of "English" dominance.

No its not a bit confusing! William-the-conquerer was French. He invaded England and won. His son (who was now english) became king when WTC died, and his son became king after him. THIS was the fella who sent an army over to Ireland to help out that bastard McMorough

Having read this thread I have to say that the premise of 'hating the English' is ridiculous. I am English, have lived here for over 9 years. During this time I have learnt of the history between the two countries which we were never taught at school. Yes things were done that should never have happened. I have had a number of incidents with people who took offense at me living in this country being an English c**t etc. I have always made the argument at this point that I personally wasn't involved in the past oppression etc. Also, I've had Irish people who I greqw to have friendships with refuse to consider me as English cos I am 'sound' as well as that I'm not really English because I'm from the North East! Hating the English people is stupid and will not gain you anything as a person. Let go, by all means hate what happened. I do for most of the empirical behavior but I can also remember that it was done at a different time. Does anyone hate the Romans etc for their conquest?

Oh really? I doubt that the vast majority of English people know what happened on 12thJuly, 1690! No, they don`t represent me, or anyone else I know English or Irish. But, I always got the impression that they (Orangemen), although identifying themselves as British, I understood that to different altogether to English. I mean they have thier own (made up, imo!) language (Ulster Scots), thier own traditions and their own sense of cultural identity that has little or nothing to do with Englishness.
