The two main parties yesterday showed yet again according to some public, their true colours in the Dail upon its previous earlier in the week re-opening. To silence the news stories, the public talking and any further media coverage on the John O'Donoghue affair, they have decided not to push for his resignation and have meekly accepted his maybe forced apology. Fianna Fail don't want him sacked because he is still a Fianna Fail member and as such holds a seat for them - keeping the majority in the Dail. Fine Gael doesn't want to push the issue further as doing so will further expose their own still secret expenses mistakes and worse, their perhaps secret abuses of the Dail monetary system. They could have - SHOULD HAVE - jumped at the opportunity (even on behalf of their ground members who work tirelessly for them) to lessen Fianna Fail's majority but they willingly sacrificed that chance in order perhaps so that their own expenses scandals should go unreported. This could have happened if Fianna Fail was to lash back at the opposition in retort for pushing Mr O'Donoghue out of office. Instead now, all the main parties want the expenses issue to go quietly away. They are afraid that the issue of expenses will blow up in their faces like the British version of events recently. The real losers in their actions is apparently the Irish public who will continue for the foreseeable future continue to be taxed and levied so that their many, many expense claims can be paid for also! The TDs also from both sides also still continue to refuse to clock in/out of the Dail as they know this would mean the public would finally be able to find out just how much time they actually spend in the Dail doing their nationally elected duty. An indication of their expenses see HERE.

Maybe go back to a Presidential governed Island.. Everyone can vote on the President, however he is only governing the country. He cannot bring in his own people etc to run Health/Finanace/Welfare etc. Instead of assigning TDs to various departments assign an accountant to Finance, a Doctor to Health etc and pay top rate for them so we get the good ones. Run the country like a business.

I do not subscribe to the theory that he is doing this just to look after the banks and builders. He may be misguided but I do think he has good intentions at heart.

Sam Vimes wrote: » It's not actually going to cost €34K per family. They're buying assets worth ~€47 billion for €54 billion because if they gave the actual figure of €47 billion the banks still wouldn't have enough money to start lending again. Over the next few years those assets are going to be sold off and in theory they'll increase in value so NAMA could make a profit (unlikely though). The point is that whatever the ultimate value of these properties, they're never going to be worth €0 which is the only way it would cost everyone €34K

The oil reserves are finite, but the prices go up and down depending on how much OPEC makes available on the market at any time compared to the demand that there is for it.
