Police 'rob' valuables from cars in order to teach careless drivers a lesson

UK Cops are robbing stuff out of cars that are left open in the UK in a bid to teach careless drivers a lesson. They then leave a note telling them that their stuff is down in the station.

The scheme is being tried out in Richmond, south west London where car crime is high.

What would happen if they found a spliff :eek:

That would be so illegal in the US that they'd have the ACLU on them faster than you can say "Fourth Amendment"

Instead of nicking valuables, they might do better, perhaps, to leave the vehicle under observation and see who comes along who's not a constable and attempts to nick the stuff. Then nab 'em. Bingo, less crime. (assuming the judge actually sorts them out)

Stealing valuables from people's cars is somewhat wrong for the police to do. They're supposed to be enforcing the law and setting an example, but by doing this they're not only breaking the law but also encouraging people even further. Has no one heard the saying two wrongs don't make a right.

i wish they'd do this with children left in cars by irresponsible parents, that pisses me the fook off. i remember once i was doing security in a shopping centre, and the police took a baby of about 8 months out of a car during christmas rush shopping time. the parents returned two hours later and said "we didn't want to wake him".

And people said Gerry and Kate McCann were irresponsible parents. Now that's really pushing it leaving a kid in an unlocked car.

Anyway now that i've thought about the topic a bit more, I think it proberly is a good lesson maker but I still think it's a little dodgy when you're a policeman taking things out of cars.

I don't see why cars don't automatically lock once the key is out of range?
