How many freeview channels can u recieve?

hi all,
firstly THANK YOU to the boards.ie Mods & contributors on this forum some weeks ago i got a flyer from those nice lying thieving gits @ sky who threatened that id have nothing soon if i didnt get their box & their box only...without urselves id still only have 7 channels with poor reception ...after reading here i made a couple of changes
1.new cables from the aerial (same aerial 20 yrs + old)
2.removing extensions /boosters
2.€10 freeview tv usb dongle/blaze media (just to be extra cheap;)
& hey presto 63 channels using blaze media 75 new channels & full epg & pvr facilities using media centre
so i bought a samsung freeview tv for the parents house then and tuned it with a result of 93 channels
sky 3 & sky sports news work in fine conditions only so far & the rest all working fine 90% of the time except in really poor weather
so im in Gorey town (gorey hill area) and wondering how many should i get?? & how many have u got??

itv1-4/russia today/yesterday/virgin+1
five/usa/life/tmf/
dave ja vu/virgin/
sky sports news/dave/quest (pre channel)

It sounds like you have the complete set, alright! I'm in the Letterkenny area but get the same selection - apart from having UTV instead of ITV1 (same thing really).

I would think that your reception would get stronger from next week - however, will the Irish digital muxes interfere with any of the above sets of stations? Can you get the Irish DTT?

Just for now i have only a uk freeview tuner..hoping to see a rte dongle tuner on the net soon as i cant be arsed with rte since they lost the saturday football::...will be keeping a close eye on tonight/tomorrow's swtich as s4c was closed last night at midnight and had a message about 12th which is Kilvey Hill transmitter if im correct ...
p.s my signal on freeview is 100%
Quality 24% on sky three & up to 71% on bbc/itv wales but all channels will work reasonably well once over the 40% mark

There is no difference between a usb tuner which can receive RTE DTT and Freeview. the only difference is the software codecs installed in your system.

I think you are getting the quality and signal mixed up there.
You wouldnt get a lockable picture on 24% quality on sky 3.

My readings are almost always 71% signal and mostly 100% quality.

You couldn't be getting 100% signal

you must be mixing up the signal and quality readings on your box or else the box is.

As regards channels,you are getting all the channels there.

DONT combine a mt leinster uhf aerial with your set up or you will lose sky news,sky sports news,Dave and e4+1 as they are co channel with mt leinster.

I dont mind not having them mind you as I have dave+1 and shur bbc news 24 is better than sky news any day imho.

To answer your question,you'll have noticed some drop outs on your channels depending on the weather.
Rare drop outs but drops none the less.
The power increase should eliminate most if not all of those.

You have all the available channels as is-I have over 40 tv channels including the ones that are only open for a few hours and the adult ones.

I like having the radio channels especially five live.

at the moment when i scan using blaze media tuner i only get bbc etc what codecs am i missing? or what exactly am i missing ..cheers

just to add,you wont get the mt leinster channels on a dongle-they're too weak for that at present in the gorey area or where I am just over the road from you.

Also you are getting your digital from preseli,the same as me.

The switch over there starts august 19th and not tonight.
So you have another week to see the results.

You will need to retune your box once the change happens and again when they switch off the others.

If you were able to receive RTE DTT and had the wrong codecs then you should be still able to receive sound and EPG location. If you can't then signal strength is your problem and most likely wont be resolved by buying a different USB tuner.

Don't know about your area but Digital signal may not be receivable. Black Briar seems to know more about that.

also some bbc appear more than once and channel line up on blaze media is all over the place where as media centre/samsung tv are all in the same place & correct....

that was before i just did a scan now and find all freeview gone and the only one that showed any strength/quality was 666.00 was at 100%/18% which is odd as that is sky 3 which rarely shows up/also on freeview tv all channels have gone

The reason you have 100% on sky 3 is that it is reading the sky3 epg data but measuring the mount leinster RTE dtt signal.

presely is the lowest I've ever seen it just now.
Relax though - that usually doesn't last long.
I'd be surprised itf it goes on for more than an hour.

nope your right it only becomes watchable @40% and above but will show up on a scan @ 24%

so will adjusting aerial position work for irish ...in my estate very few aerials are in the same direction tomorrow i hope to post a pic of my aerials so u can know more there are 3 on it one up the very top one smaller in the centre and one unusually shaped one at the bottom

That couldnt be right.
It should be the other way round.Theres something wrong with that.
But I wouldn't care to be honest, all that matters is whether you have the channels.
Trust me-I first got digital from presely in 2001 and have seen it in loads of places where reception is generally a lot better than in gorey town and it's never been 100%.
Digital terrestrial from wales has been available in this part of the world for over 10 years.

The highest I've seen it here is about 80%

By the way there are an awfull lot of preseli aerials around gorey- a maze of them - do please tell the locals about your experience and let them know after the full switch over on september 19th [I think] that they can get this.
T'would be a shame to see all those good aerials wasted and most of them look in very good nick.

By the way,we still have the BBC mux here despite the bad reception tonight-it rarely if ever goes.

All channels are back now.
Tonight was a longer drop than usual but still only an hour.
I'd expect less droppage after the power increase.

Yes on a scan with blaze today
54 channels picked up a good 54-60% on all recieved but as usual
sky3,dave,sky sports news,sky news...@ 666.00 mhz didnt reach any higher than 18% so nothing new there !!

i suspect the outage was planned as the weather here is the same now as last night too

As u know there is no cable in gorey un-like arklow which has cable just about everywhere & had free sky channels for near 20 years at this stage...and yes lots of aerials here too as there was very little else to be had but sky with the mini-dish & range of channels have done well here as im sure u would see on a drive around here and yet all of the people i know who have it do nothing but complain about them ...so yes i have been & will continue to tell everyone about freeview & fta sat too
P.S just having channel "dave ja vu" working is enough for me never to worry about sky again..personally id love to see them fold in the morning:D

Is it likely I'll get good freeview reception in between Rathnew/Wicklow Town up on the hill? We have a clear view of the sea... However when I got an aerial installed within the last year for RTE (get good DTT from 3 rock which surprised me - possibly now from Kippure) the dude installing it said come DSO I'd get no signal from Wales so adviced against sticking an aerial up for that...

Assuming I'd get signal, is it possible to combine an aerial pointing at Wales with the Irish one to feed a single DTT tuner? There's VHF/UHF aerials combined at the mo. Think the guy has stuck the pole on the wrong side of the house to point it at Wales which is a bummer, but for Dave and stuff that's not on FTA Sat I'd be temped if another aerial would do the trick.

The cynic in me is wondering whether aerial installers are saying digital tv from the uk is a no go because they can make more money on putting in a cheap satellite box and dish! Plus there's always the extra work of installing dtt when the govt./bci pull their fingers out!

clearly they aren't getting any information from digital uk... but then they wouldn't be signed up to their accredited aerial installer scheme.

The answer to your question is probably yes.
I'd need to see where you are but if arfon is directly out to sea with no hills in the way,I see no reason why you shouldn't have the same or better level of service with their 2kw transmission than I am currently having with preseli's 1.5kw erp.

Your aerial guy didn't know what he was talking about by the way.

Is it possible to receive the Preseli mux on channel 45 (Dave,sky3 etc) by not combining your Irish and English aerials.
Our aerials have always been combined and it was my understanding that the strong local signal on Mount Leinster would effectively drown out this mux and ultimately a few others.

The problem I understand from ukfree.tv with arfon is that it will only be a freeview lite transmitter and will never carry the stations I cant get on FTA Sat (ie Dave). So what's the likelyhood that I'll be able to get preseli or Llanddona on the coast near Wicklow town? Or any others that will carry the full freeview mux's that are not west blocked?

It is very unlikely that you're receiving anything from Kilvey Hill... you're improved reception may just be down to atmospheric conditions.

From later this morning you will get the improved BBC Mux A which will broadcast at 20kw for the first time, rather than the 1.5kw up until now.

Can I get these channels from Athlone area or do I need to be on the east coast.

If yes what do I need?, I've a sony KDL32V4500 and I can get RTE 1,2, TV3, TG4, Radio 1, 2FM , Lyric FM, RnaG on digital. They go off air nearly every other day and when the're on, the EPG hardly ever works.
I wouldnt mind getting some of those channels mentioned in the above posts!

Any advice on what to do/get?

So today..bbc2 is gone & itv is sitting where bbc2 was tuned in...

9a.m 1st freeview Scan:weather conditions :Very poor

Samsung(built in freeview) tv: 52 channels found (was 93)
(BBC1234news,Five,Fiver,Five u.s.a yesterday,dave ja vu,virgin1, bbc radio set)

PC1: blaze media player scan : 8 channels found (was 77) (BBC 1,2,news,parliament,cbeebies,radio1 xtra,bbc radio Cymru)

The analogue is not turned down.
It's on the same power as usual.It's just suffering from the usual effects of the bad weather.

The good news is that the bbc mux has been much more stable today and no drop outs [with me anyhow].
This is the worst weather you can get for presely analogue reception and the lesson today is the same bad weather is not affecting the high power bbc mux at all.

I am expecting that from september 16th,the mux with itv and ch4 and five will behave the same as its very near the bbc mux on the b band and will have the same power.

Tonight tells us what we wanted to know and it is fantastic news and that is that the new high power services are going to be a useable service to anyone that has had decent presely analogue to date.

It's all good.

:mad: Hope someone can help. In Wicklow town area and intermittently got the Freeview channels. Currently getting Irish DTT on 738 and 794 but no Freeview. Have 2 UHF ariels, one pointing north to Mt. Leinster and one out to Wales. Both are muxed together with an amp on the Wales ariel. Still getting the UK analog signals (thought this was to be switched off yesterday). So, assuming that Freeview is broadcasting at the moment what should I be looking at? Is the Irish DTT blocking out the Freeview feed.
Any pointers would be welcomed.
