Ireland - Still A Backward Country?

We all know that Ireland, once one of the most socially backward countries in the world, has approached the social mores of its Western European neighbours over the past 30 or so years with the decriminalisation of contraception, divorce and gay sex (decades after most other developed countries).

However, there are still things where Ireland has quite a long, long way to go before it can even dream to call itself modern.

Let's see...

Abortion still illegal
Pornography still illegal
Same sex civil unions or any official regognition of same sex relationships illegal
Blasphemy law introduced
Debtors still sent to prison
Most schools still controlled by religious orders
Grossly underfunded mental health care
No State provided childcare facilities

Get the picture? Ireland is still a pretty backward country in my opinion.:( Let's not kid ourselves and pretend that our farting about during the bubble years made us anything special. To many of our European cousins were are still a small minded and backward little island.:mad:

A very very small minority. Although i admit when i'm mistaken, yes bi-sexual people can indeed! Actually as a point of clarification i have yet to find any info on what % of a country / area are homosexual?

Where did i say they should have equal rights? Free speech is not equal rights. I couldn't give a sh1te what people say . Say whatever you want, call me whatever you want i don't care.

Pay for your own childcare facilities.

Everything else should change. Legalise abortion, woman's right to choose. Porn is illegal, technically ...maybe but realisticly not a chance. Blasphemy's laws are a joke, a complete destruction of our rights to free speech and the country should separate church and state and become more secular.

The irish state does not track the numbers of people who are homosexual or hetrosexual or indeed asexual.

Equal rights mean I should be able to marry another adult of my choosing, rather then being told I can't marry another adult cos they have the same genitals as me.

I think Ireland is quite a liberal country and we have struck a fair balance, Abortion is banned and rightly so, Gay people are not discriminated against and I think Ireland is not backward but rather forward on social issues. Just cos there was a parade that does nto mean that 'gay' people are not discriminated against. 'Gay couples do not have the same rights as hetrocouples.

Firstly the civil partnership bill is just that a bill and not law and it is incredibly flawed.

Gay people can not get married to thier partners.

They can not adopt.

There are still property, pension rights and inheritance rights which are for married spouses only.

A homosexual co habiting couple is treated differently by the dept of social welfare and by the revenue commissioners.

Ireland is not the liberal place you think it is, seriously pop over to the lgb fourm and learn a few things.

However isn't the very definition of Marriage an intimate and personal relationship between a man and a woman? I think I was only on the lgb forum once and generally have little to do with homosexuals as there is a "guilty* by association" culture attached in our society.

What sort of problems are there regarding tax etc.

*not that there is actually anything to be guilty of provided you are not religious of course.
