The new season is upon us and the Scratch Cup calendar will shortly be in full swing. I've played in a handful of these over the past few years (Headfort, Naas, St. Margaret's, Dundalk, Westmanstown) with only Headfort being one where I'd make an extra special effort to play in again.

My question to you is which Scratch Cups (Junior or Intermediate) do you look fwd to each year and why?

Well the monsoon season hit us yesterday. Had managed to get to the 12th before the flooded greens made it impossible to putt on. It has been refixed for 23rd Aug.

2009 John Lumsden Memorial Cup, which takes place on Sunday August 2nd, 2009 (entry deadline: Friday, July 17th @ 1pm). The maximum entry is 81 competitors. If this number is exceeded, a ballot will be held. Players balloted out will have their entry fee refunded.

Last Years cut off was around 5.1 I think

Well as I had already stated I wasnt playing great. Carlow was in great nick but it played very tough. My first round was a disaster and if im very honest embarrassing. I came in with a 92 nothing was happening for me. I know of a 5 handicapper who came in with a 89 so I didnt feel so bad and other guy out with me was no better. My second round was practice as it hardly mattered at that stage so it was a N/R .1 .

From reports coming back I certainly wasnt the worst and by all accounts nobody tore it up. 74 - 76 won it which was very impressive given the conditions. Nobody ever told me how hilly Carlow is ?? 2 rounds there is tough going.

I had an emphatic pair of point ones, played fierce tough, I dunno the course so I'd say I hit at least 15 provos out there cos I didn't know if my ball was in the shit-house or not.

Very very tough though, very hilly too!

Im' a member of Portmarnock GC but its not my home club... Would'nt mind a crack at what seems to be a fantastic links...gonna take university membership there next year and would'nt mind an early preview!

10. The tournament shall only be open to members of affiliated Clubs in Leinster.

That's the note in the comp rules so going by that you'll be able to enter. It's a bit of an odd scratch comp in that the top prize is for the best nett on the day.

That whole nett thing is odd but essentially with a cut off of 5.1 last year they'd have to give 5 h'caps some impetus to play such a demanding course? Otherwise it'd be a senior on

yeah we were off the back tee's

They are mostly serious par 4's apart from one or two.
The par 3's are all very tough too as it was playing into wind and shortest was 160 yards if I remember correctly.

With only 2 par 5's on the course it doesnt give you huge amount of chances for handy birdies.

All that said it was a day I couldnt do much right anyway and on another day there was a reasonable score out there but it plays long at 6100 metres into the wind ha

Re: the Lucan JSC next Sunday as Graeme said the timesheet can be found on the club website. I understand there are close to 80 names booked so still some spots open.

Fingers crossed we'll be ok but it would be wise to add the club number to your mobile (01-6280246) so that you can dial up on Sunday morning to see what the situation is.

Have a had a crappy week due to a family berevement so am looking forward to 36 holes of just getting away so hopefully it is on..

Went up to hit balls tonight but wasn't in the right frame at all so not expecting anything bar .1 but still hoping it goes ahead

Handicaps 10-18, €20 for visitors.
Senior and Junior Scratches are on together on Sunday 2nd August.

Lucan JSC won yesterday by a young lad from Clontarf playing off 5 with a total of 149 (77, 72 I think). The best score after Round 1 was 71 which gave the leader a 4 shot lead heading out in the afternoon but unfortunately he signed for an NR having turned +7 after 9 holes and then losing a ball on the 17th.

All in all a good day but a little disappointing that we had a number of no shows (including 3 from Royal Dublin) and no phone calls to let us know they weren't coming.

Glowing reports from all of the competitors I spoke to regarding the presentation of the course even if one or two pin positions caused some problems.

Our resident Scot, Graeme1982, who was first on the course with his buddy from Elm Green, managed to complete both 18's in a little over 3.5 hours each. Hope you enjoyed your day Graeme and good to meet you.

Glad to hear the day went well. Have to say the no-show thing is a disgrace in my book. At the very least a courtesy call is all it takes as early as you can to perhaps facilitate someone else to fill your place.

I would loved to have played but I'm on bubble watch as my Mrs is due any day now. Hopefully next year.

Well we're going to send letters to each of their clubs together with an invoice for the fee. We very well may not receive the entrance fee in return but the embarrassment these guys will hopefully feel after being contacted by their club's Committees asking why they've received a stern letter from Lucan may make them think twice about treating JSC's with such disrespect in future.

Proper order too. Have to say the pre-payment thing is a half decent deterant for some, but it should go against your record (3 strikes and a couple of months suspension or something). Our own JSC had several no-shows also, most of which were members, who were subsequently reported.
