shalaska, this thread seems to contain the most info about the course. Worth remembering you can do it directly and through Arts with other subject(s).

so that means less hours ? in second year do u move to full IT ?

In first Arts, you'd be studying four subjects so it would be unrealistic to have people doing the same workload as those studying IT directly.

For example, 1BA timetable versus 1IF timetable. Worth mentioning that some labs may appear more than once on a timetable but you're only required to attend one. Also, for the IT timetable at least, there are options so now all those modules are actually taken when it comes to languages, the business option or Next Generation Technology.

In second Arts, you'd be studying two subjects so it might be fair to expect more hours or a slightly higher workload. So it's not quite moving to "full" IT as you put it.

cheers , so a degree in arts with IT wouldnt be to the same standereds as a scince degree in IT ? anychance ya know what the hours are like for IT in first year ?

im split between undom engineering or IT at the moment , I heard undom has high hours but you dont have to go to half the lectures if have the bacsics from the lc , would ya know if this is true?

if you're hell bent on IT, then Arts isn't much good really, you just don't get enough hands on experience at the lower level, and you'd need to do a masters if you want to get a job in the area as companies just wont look at you (know this first hand

) .

However, what it does do is open up a lot more doors. So you could combine Maths, Economics or a language with IT and get a very good degree that will open up more opportunities later on than just a pure IT degree.

half true. the lectures are still mandatory. you wont have to work as hard at it, but if you think you're gonna be able to walk away from lectures you'll still struggle like anyone would.

I think it's fair to say the answer to that is no. It's brilliant when you're really torn between subjects that you really like and when you can't study them simultaneously any other way. Hours wise, I think I had ~19 a week in first year (lectures, labs, tutorials inclusive) which was very reasonable. Second year, first semester in particular, has a lot more hours -- much closer to 30.

Not overly familiar with undenominated engineering but, yes, from what I heard, the first year does have a good few hours. Genuinely, honours LC maths, physics makes think a lot easier for IT and for engineering (maybe chemistry as well for engineering) considering IT and engineering students are in a lot of the same classes in first year; maths in particular. This can make missing lectures less stressful but it really is better to go if you can because not all lecturers will make notes available elsewhere.

hoping to head into IT next year aswel...the negatives im hearing are seeming shocking...but it's not about to put me off it.
i'm just hoping that with the big R the course wont empty out but from what i hear its fairly empty as is? well should at least mean you get some sort of attention then!

Any course is bound to have its downsides. This course if fairly broad as well. The GY350 course (IT directly) is accredited by Engineers Ireland.

Numbers aren't overwhelming but some modules are taken with other classes so those groups are bigger.

I asked this question in a different thread earlier but I think its more suited here. Anyways I was just wondering does everyone who studies IT have the right to request past FYP reports. Or are these confidential? Or only available to final year students?

If you're looking for a job, study either.

If you're looking to know what you're doing once you get that job, study "full IT".

This comes from someone who studied IT through Arts which is a horribly poor standard of teaching and an equally poor attitude of lecturers teaching you.
