What size hurl do you use?

Hey guys!
Was just chatting wit d boys in training this morning and the subject of hurley sizes came up!
I hav used everything from 36" to 32" myself since turned senior.

Currently playing center forward.
I'm 5ft 11"
Using 33" hurl

Whats every body else playing with?
Please incudle playing position and height for comparisons.

Quite short, ya know King Henry uses a 37", but he's 6'3".

Corner back, 5'10" use a 35".

5'9" left corner forward using a 34" hurley. Bit heavier than i'd prefer but once i connect it flies like a bullet:) Works out good if i have to pull hard on the corner back too;)

Wing/corner back, 6'1" and normally use a 35" but the one I'm using at the moment is a 36". It's a nice weight though so I don't mind it.

Coach always recommended that the kids could control the smaller hurl better and would become better players as a result.

I'm a 5foot 5 corner forward playing with a 34",I was playing with a 35" up until this year! Far too big for a little one like myself!

i use a 36in . 1m 6ft 1in and play full forward

I'm 5'9", playing corner-forward and I use a 35".

Been wondering for a while about dropping down to 34" though (I didn't play from age 15 till I came back aged 24 last year, so it seemed to make sense to take a bigger size than I had back then) so some good food for thought here...

Based on my recent glorious return to hurling here in Chicago on the J1;

6'2" using a 35

Thinking bout getting a longer one sent over, I'm finding hard to get to the bottom of the ball striking on the ground. Probably just me though not having hurling a good few years.

Gaelic Park is unreal too btw, a must for anyone visiting Chicago who plays GAA.

I play left half back. As for what size hurley, i used to carry a 36'' but found it to be very heavy and cumbersum, its an O'Connor hurley so its got a big boss. The 34'' i found a bit too short so i've been using a 35'' for a while now.

The measuring point I was told about when i was younger was the length of the hurley to the hip bone. Heard Paudie Butler saying that you should line hurley up along leg and however far down your hand reaches that should be the handle of the hurley. Does that make sense?

Wing/corner back 5 10 34/35. would use 34 if in the corner to make it harder to get blocked/hooked. Have to bend the knees a little more when striking on the ground though. Would use 35 on wing to launch balls and to have a pop at the posts from distance.

I was told by someone before that it should be you inside leg plus one or two inches, depending if you like a shorter hurley or not.

my old man used to say the same thing about the hip bone,i have one of his old hurleys from the mid 70's and it measures *37" and he was only 5'7" tall. so seems long compared to what people use these days.the game was brutal in those days round london !!

5'9'' and use a 34'' hurl, but noticed a falconer i bought that was marked as a 34'' is actually a 33' and find it very comfortable so!!!!! feels "tidier" when i play wit it!

the method for measuring hurleys for young children is from where their hand goes down.

When I'm checking measurement, I ask the kids to stand like soldiers, straight with their hands down by their sides. The top of the handle (where the hurley grip normally starts, not the nobby bit) should fit into their hand, shouldn't be longer than that. Thats for length, then for weight, they should be able to hold the hurley out for 30 seconds holding it comfortably. Don't do it by the hip, because when you are swinging to play the ball, especially on the ground, the elbow is nearly straight, and if the hurley is too long (by measuring it at the hip) the child will hit the ground and not the ball, and then slide their hands down the handle to hit the ball, and the top of the handle of the hurley will jab into their stomachs. The smaller the hurley, the better it is for getting the skills right, especially when they are young.

For older players, the hurley should be measured the same way, but can go longer - not too long though! Forwards generally prefer a smaller, lighter hurley to get the shots away without being hooked, backs prefer a slightly longer one, to be able to hook forwards. At older levels, it is a matter of preference, but I know a camogie team that changed their hurleys from 33's & 34's to 32's and 33's and won their first ever county, because the skill were sharper with the smaller hurley. I've seen the difference at younger level of the correct size hurley, does wonders for children.
