Can people be "serious" on After Hours?

After the shameful posts on the Air France thread, I think there's an argument for keeping threads like that off After Hours. I hate to use the word serious per se, as I believe After Hours should be a place where matters of the day should be discussed in a less serious way. But posters should practice some restraint and cop on. I mean some of the posts were just shameful. It seems to me no matter the discussion, some muppets will always try to take things down a level in order to create hatred and bad feeling. I'm all for people expressing an opinion and all that goes along with same, but there's a fine line. I just wish some people would cop the fcuk on.

After Hours is not the bottom of the barrel, it is quite the opposite in my opinion. It is the general Irish public being themselves. Things that deserve to be taken seriously are, things that don't aren't, and no matter how serious the subject there are still going to be a few people who will crack a joke, but those with some sense know where the line is with each case.

IMO everything is fair game for humour, but I'm not so insensitive as to rub salt in the wounds of people who are directly affected by a tragedy. Not because I don't think the jokes would be funny, but because I have some respect for the suffering of others. I've made jokes about abortion, Maddie, 9/11, the tsunami, and nameless other horrible things on this forum, and I've made cancer jokes in St Lukes Hospital while my mother was in there being treated for cancer. It's not about whether or not there are lines, it's about having respect for others where appropriate and understanding the situation.

stepbar, the fact that you have to continually argue the toss with people on this thread to get a quite simple point across whilst it is continuously misconstrued (more likely than not deliberately), and often by some of the better AH posters, should show you what you're up against. For the record, I agree entirely, I just hate to see a good man waste his time.

I didn't see that joke or the other one you mention. I was referring to the normal maddie threads that pop up now and again.

There has been some serious topics discussed in AH. With AH, its all about the first couple of posts. If it starts with a joke the thread gets derailed. If not, then it can be as indepth as Humanities.

While the majority of the Air France thread posts were uncalled for (and I did not contribute to the thread) this is After Hours! Trying to talk about a serious topic where you expect serious replies is complete and utter madness.

Anyone posting in After Hours has to be aware that their topic can and most likely will be torn to shreds.

Go elsewhere if you want to have a serious discussion ffs :rolleyes:

While I agree, morality and humour and the fine lines are all subjective I have to wonder about some of the freaks that just do not give a flying f@ck and will joke about or say anything after hours or not. Just because you can get away with saying anything in after hours doesn't mean you should.

Its Ok to joke about the grossly moronic dead. ie, remember that thread about the couple run over and killed by a train because they were having sex on the train tracks. Even if I was a friend of theirs, I don't think I could object to all the puns. Its a different story when you are talking about 250 people who did nothing stupid or wrong and probably died horrible deaths.

Theres a lot of talk that these freaks should 'Cop On'. What does that mean. They should have known not to post the sick joke? What freak thinks of the sick joke in the first place to have to cop on about??!!

sometimes common sense should prevail and people should realise when the line is crossed. theres a right for free speech but showing up yourself and indeed boards should come into peoples minds.

yesterdays episode really was a disgrace and i was not the only one who thought so. we have people on this website who live, work and socialise with the deceased, yet people clearly saw nothing wrong with taking the pi*s. i wonder if the people involved would be online posting if it was their friends involved? would the f*ck.

boards has successfully ridded afterhours of the yore ma vibes, which too time. surely, its not alot to ask a bit of respect when theres an accident like this? after hours is the place where anything goes, so it means that what evers topical, is usuable on after hours. this should not change. but if people want to be idiots on "serious" threads, then mods should nip it in the bud with a warning early on and then bannings if it contines. surely, those posts could have been deleted or else the threads moved?

The internet is an opt-in media. you can choose to take offense or not, just like you would do in real life.

If you choose to take offense, you have another choice ahead of you. Do you
a) reply
b) report the post (if it's breaking rules)
c) close the thread and move on.

AH isn't /b/. but it also isn't the place for serious handwringing. sure, serious topics can and often are discussed, but expect the full range of human reactions, not just those that you feel are appropriate.

people dont have to post on every thread also you know. there are probably 20 or so oppurtunitires to take the piss every day on various threads, why do people feel the need to write something smart on all of them? if people said those opinions in public, they wouldnt be long being told to shut up, afterhours should be no different for certain things, like yesterday. how any can defend some of the comments, is amazing.

I think you are in fact the only one who sees it like that my man. I really really did not intend that to come across. It is clear people are unhappy with that thread. What's also clear is that other people were having a laugh and do not know what the problem is. Yet other users were offended. Some users were only offended by some of the potentially offensive comments but not others. Others were offended when it turned out some people were Irish. There are a lot of reasons why that thread can be construed as offensive. Other people just hate puns.
I looked up "What to do in the event of air disaster" in the AH mods rulebook. It said "Best duck and cover." So I locked the thread.

I am glad this thread is here. Some people on here have a bit of a conscience after all.

There was a much much worse thread on here before about child abuse, with numerous jokes about rape and abuse and a girl poster told to feck off when she said she found it insulting, I believe a poster also told her 'dont let your dad tap you on the way out'. I lost all respect for AH after that. I come in here sometimes when I see interesting threads on the homepage but not usually.

The old 'either you make fun of everything or you dont' chestnut was wheeled out at me at the time, which I thought was pure s*ite, and still do.

You either think about other people's suffering or you don't, and if you did you wouldn't joke about it.

As a poster said on here before - would you laugh about 200+ people dying when you're in your local supermarket? It's easy to do it hiding behind a screen name and thats what makes it look pathetic.

I wonder how many people who were offended have laughed at xyz dead celebrity jokes in the past. I agree some of the comments went across a line. There is a difference between lightening the mood and being insensitive.

The report post function is there for a reason. It allows the mods to take a temperature check on a thread. The mods can come in and try put the thread back on track, then issue bans or lock it.

If people make proper reports on posts rather then posting complaints in the thread or in a seperate thread (not this one), then some serious debate might happen.

BTW, before anyone says "The mods are just as bad, look at Terry's Ben Linus comment" after me suggesting to report the posts. Terry is a user before mod. He becomes a mod when you complain to him.
