Good old generalisms, sure there are plenty of people who are taking advantage of good conditions and doing **** all, but its across all the generations as far as I can see. Where i work I see alot of people who get paid alot for doing simple work, but go out of there way to be obtuse as possible, reaching for the union telephone the second they see anything amiss. I dont think those people would anything better off than the sterotypical lazy student if they lost there job.

Also, if we really are going to getting into generation wars, I dont think i recall any of these cappichino sippers running the goverment, banks and property develpment organizations who got us into this mess. Maybe its because there are just as many chancers across all of ages of society ?

I fail to see the benefits of sniping at each other when all seem to be in pretty much the same boat of having to deal with a large drop in wages. These are hard times for many families and regardless of income levels each will suffer as a result. None of the previous posters are in any way responsible for this situation. They did not cause the economic crisis; did not squander the huge budgetary excesses of the Celtic Tiger years and certainly did not gain much from those years.

Personally, I am down over 400 per month and, to save the question, I am in the public sector, principal teacher in a primary school earning around 75,000 which is quite good money but is only what was judged fair by the benchmarking body set up by government which compared my work with similar work in the private sector.

Do I deserve this level of pay? I believe so though, to be honest, I feel there is a great unfairness when I chat to friends in the Gardai and realise they are paid far less for, in my opinion, a most dreadful demanding and dangerous job. I'm sure others could name other jobs which they think ought to attract a wage similar to mine and they may be perfectly correct. I am at the latter end of my career and, believe me, it is one I will gladly leave behind.

I don't mind the begrudgers. I think people are suffering these days and letting off steam is to be expected. Believe me I have worked hard at my job; my health and family has suffered as a result and I am ready to throw in the towel - as, apparently, are about 400 other primary school principals this summer. There must be something about the job that has them all running!

lol. Read the Irish Indo much... I hope you don't seriously believe that any public sector workers are earning the kind of money needed for a 3% levy to discommode them of 400 yo-yos since May 1st. Worse still if anyone honestly believes that public servants on that cash would be hanging around here posting about it.

I presume the bankers, solicitors and estate agents are also feeling the pinch. At least they have their nest eggs to fall back on.

That's a hell of a lot of money for someone that works 9am to 3pm and has their summers off, a hell of a lot.

The benchmarking was set out in the boom times, we're in a stephen now.

There are no private sector jobs that pay that well for those hours AND have summers off.

You should make an effort to understand a job before dissing it.

Why not ask her/him what hours she does.
Ask her/him how many people she/he manages.
Ask how much holidays she/he gets.
Ask how many years experience she/he has.

Inform yourself before jumping to conclusions. There is no way you can talk about her/his salary and whether they are worth it if you dont have any information on their circumstances.

Really, explain to me how thousands civil servants just got a 3% pay rise?? Its as if that sector is in another world! But soon, and very soon, civil servants jobs will be axed by the thousands, there's no way around it... also wages will come down tremendously... in line with inflation, which is what it should be like in the civil service. You talk about your pension levys... well private workers are talking about there ****ing jobs (pardon the language!)

They wont come down in line with inflation at all.
That would mean that they will have to rise in line with inflation when inflation rises.

Inflation wont fall for too long.

If we bankrupt each other then on-one can pay their bills, mortgages, bla-bla, and us all, Johnny taxpayer (excepting cash-in handers, which you'd never do) then we can all escape our contracts for houses, cars and one bed Costa-del-crap which we couldn’t afford but bought anyway. But thats a principal that's close to retirement, which means they've been working for the last 40 odd years, if you work your way up to a principal after than long service, I don't think an unreasonable amount to be earning.
