TV's with MPEG4 DTT decoder

Hello,

I'm new to a lot of the issues around DTT and am in the market for a new television. I was just wondering is there are any TV's out there that have MPEG4 decoders build into them so I would not have to get a seperate decoder when DTT goes fully live. Could anyone recommend a TV that they know has this decoder?

I was thinking of getting this TV but am nearly sure it does not support MPEG4...

I mentioned this TV a few days ago, I got it to work with full EPG and Digital Aertel.
Seems to only work if you choose UK as region.

Dosen't support Fada's for Program Descriptions on TG4. :eek:

News just in today:

The group which last year won a contract to provide digital terrestrial television (DTT) services in Ireland has pulled out of the project.

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland said Boxer - which includes Denis O'Brien's Communicorp and BT - had withdrawn its applications for the three multiplex contracts.

Boxer blamed the economic downturn and 'challenges' in reaching a deal on transmission facilities with RTE Networks for its decision.

The BCI said it would now ask the second place applicant in last year's competition - One Vision - whether it was interested in negotiating on the contracts. One Vision includes TV3, Setanta and Eircom.

BCI chairperson Conor Maguire said the commission was 'disappointed' but was committed to pursuing its digital policy objectives.

Under legislation, the BCI was to licence commercial DTT for three multiplexes - or bundles of channels - while RTÉ was assigned a single DTT multiplex to ensure the continued availability of the four existing free-to-air services in Ireland - RTÉ 1, RTÉ 2, TG4 and TV3.

RTÉ is to set up and run this DTT multiplex independently of BCI-licensed multiplexes in fulfilment of its public-service obligations.

Yes there is DTT from Mt. Leinster for quite a while now. However TG4 has been replaced by a DTT testcard for weeks and the EPG no longer works.

On the Boxer debacle, the problem is that according to the BCi figures, SKy and UPC have 1.2 million of 1.5 million TV households so there is no one to sell DTT to.

The second problem is that all the UK channels are free on satelite and DTT would be unable to carry them for free so there is no one left to pay for commercial DTT.

Sat for Free are in effect freesat boxes. For Freesat branded boxes to have been made freely available in Ireland might have been questioned by UK taxpayers. I can only speculate that these boxes were released here by "someone" who had the backing of "someone else" probably for these very reasons.

The RTEs, Tg4, and Tv3 will never be available FTA on the Astra Satelitte due to rights issues.

The commercial multiplex operator would always have been in competition with the NTls and SKys of this world as an alternative platform. Whilst the UK stations are FTA on sat, they are not on cable.

PSB = Public Service Broadcasting - as in what our national broadcaster is (should be)

Multiplex = group of TV and/or radio channels carried digitally on a broadcast frequency

ASO = Analogue Switch Off - 2012/2015 when all analogue TV broadcasting is due to be terminated.

DDT = insecticide banned many years ago.

we already have tv chanells from all over europe but we cant get our own unless we pay sky for them. we are in the the e.u.

Anyone got any news on Samsung 2009 models? I'm looking for a 37" and have found references to a model number called UE37B6000. I can find no proper info on any website about it. Could it possibly have another model number for the Irish market?

Are you sure that number's right?

All Samsung models start with LE. There's the LE37B550, one of 3 37" TV's going by Samsung's UK website (their IE site only lists the old A models). Again, Samsung website fails on saying what spec teh DTT tuner is (even not mentioning DTT tuner at all). But a google search reveals that this "base" 37" has MPEG4.

I suggest you browse Samsung.pl website. It shows that TV's have MPEG4: "Tuner cyfrowy DVB-T MPEG4 i HD TV"

Mpeg4 yes. Its not dvb-t2. Its dvb-t.

And not a bad price either.

Can anyone confirm the smallest and cheapest lcd with mpeg4 decoder? I've only seen the Samsung LE19b450 so far in Harveys for €299 and in Dixons UK for £195 (€220)

I got a Sony KDL 40W5500 with mpeg 4 and I'd recommend it.

The digital EPG looks pretty slick too.

I'm fairly baffled though. I tuned in the analogue stations fine no problem.

All the digital channels appear there though but only Buzz TV and RTE One work.

I wasn't expecting anything to work in digital yet to be honest.

So is this DTT up and running in certain areas?

My signal to TV is pretty weak, wired it up myself about 15 years ago when I was a kid, if I fixed it up is it likely that I'd get more channels on digital?

If you're getting Buzz TV then you're receiving UPC's DVB-C service, not DVB-T. You're only receiving the two of those channels because they're in the clear on UPC.

Do you know if NTL broadcast these in Mpeg 2 or 4?

Reason I ask is because I want to be sure my tv is Mpeg 4 and not Mpeg 2.

Model number with U at the end is UK version Mpeg 2. The box had a U on it but not at the end of the model number but the sticker on the tv with the serial number doesn't have a U on it so I'm not 100% sure.

I just bought it yesterday and it was advertised as Irish DTT ready so if it's not I'd rather exchange it sooner rather than later.

Are there much other channels in the clear10 on NTL if I was to improve the signal. A good few work (I think so anyway for a second then go black which is probably down to poor signal as RTE does this the odd time.

I don't know the specifics of what's in the clear or not. They use MPEG-2 though.

Plug out the NTL cable. DTT does not broadcast over cable. Plug in an indoor aerial you'll get the 4 dtt channels RTE1,2,TV3 and Tg4 and 4 radio channels. The DTT quality is significantly better than wattery NTL.

Yes and Yes. Pixmania..... some people have their reservations. I think there are several threads here.
