Religous Nuts on boards.ie

Hi all,
I'm trying not to LOL very loudly at all the extreme religous nuts. I'm not talking about the God Squads from the Islamic & Christain forums, I'm talking about users who believe earthquakes are caused by people being "bad" (but Vegas is still standing: does God think it's okay?), and pretty much any other event that they can't explain, such as the sun "magically drying your wet clothes", etc.

Are these people taking the piss, or are there nuts like this out there?

Depending on your definition of intelligence, that may not be the case. If your test allows for "learned" intelligence then the first world countries will have a significant advantage over the more populous 3rd world countries. Maybe even enough to skew the average away from the median.

Indeed, I probably should have qualified that it requires something of an even distribution (which is normal for most non-complex scientific measures). In his example, if 5,000,001 people get 0% and 4,999,999 people get 100%, then the average mark is 49.99999% whereas the median mark is 0%. Which means they're nowhere near converging. But that's not an even distribution.

Thats what they do and I don't have to annoy myself thinking of how so many people can believe such a load of crap.On the other hand I understand that it is comforting for alot of people. But still...come on like.

people will believe what comes easiest to them, whether it be *insert deity here* or science or just plan old 'nothing'.

a lot of non-religious people who would tend to follow scientific explanations of the world would see themselves are more intelligent than religious types, but thats far from accurate, there's plenty of stupid atheists just as much as there are very intelligent theists, thanks to a little thing they like to call 'faith'.

with faith in a deity you don't need any imperical evidence, any more than a happily married couple would need solid evidence of the fidelity of their partner. faith and love will carry you through.

although, on the other hand, belief in a mystical sky wizard who created the whole universe and everyone in it and gave them 'free will' and then punishes all of them indescriminately for the sins of their furthest ancestors and threatens eternal damnation for anyone who doesn't follow his path seems more than a little bit daft. :eek:

I try to respect other peoples beliefs but it is very disturbing to think people out there believe such utter nonsense.

intelligence is a guasiian distribution, so that is correct. Nothing to do with size of sample though. The median and average income of the world doesnt converge.

As for the crazy smart Atheists. Congragulations. Well done on your bravery in 2009 on attacking "religion" ( i.e. Catholicism) in Ireland. Where were ye all in 1951.

My suspicion is that the fear of religion - which is clearly accelerating recently as tradtional western religions decline - is not really a fear of Christianity, Buddism or Hinduism.

In fairness I imagine a goodly amount of them were still in Holy God's pocket back then (or a twinkle in their father's eye if you're not religious). My dad wasn't even born in 1951.

Lol. Seriously though, why are so many people apparently intentionally trying to annoy themselves by lurking around on the christianity board? And then bringing its craziness over to AH to annoy everybody else? As far as I can see, there a few Christian posters here, and a lot of Atheist posters, and most people are perfectly affable, amusing individuals until (and it's more or less daily at this point) somebody posts a Christianity thread here, and everyone goes nucking futs.

I agree there is quite a few religious nuts on boards, just as there is in society in general. I find the nonsense that spews from them hilarious!

Though the same can be said for the Conspiracy Theorys board, you get some real gems in there too.

Good point, I always thought atheism was a non thing, why go on about it. It means nothing really and being one should mean you dont need to be anything and have nothing to say about anything and talking about nothing doesnt make it anything ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I'm sure there was some e-penis wagging on it alright but I couldn't date a real religious person, one that follows the rules and beliefs (I don't mean the average lapsed catholic) for the same reason I'd be scared dating someone who kept invisible faries in the locker beside her in bed at night.

I think the issue on boards is that we all label each other very easy as small talk isn't as big as in real life. I have a friend who if I met on boards I would think he's a "religious nut" but get him talking about other things and he's cool. I also have a "snyper-esque" mate who doesn't freak me out anymore

Religion should be brought to the forefront and questioned, criticized and ridiculed. These people are doing the right thing.
