Does everyone have a laptop these days?

I'm sitting in bed here drinking a beer surfing the net and watching some divx and I can hardly remember a time when using a computer primarily consisted of sitting at a desk facing a big computer made up of an array of boxes and peripherals.

Hooray for Laptops. They really are a marvelous invention. If it wasn't already St. Patricks Day I'd propose that today be annual laptop day.

I used to have a laptop. It stopped working so I then got a desktop and don't bother with laptops anymore.

erm my 2 year old macbook still wipes the floor over my desktop when it comes to photoshop CS4 / lightroom 2 etc.

I have an XPS710 desktop. I feel its running on borrowed time at the moment. Probably get another year or two out of it. Not going to bother upgrading or replacing parts.

Instead going to move back to using a laptop. Don't PC game much anymore and love my ps3.

Have had a laptop for 8 years and couldn't imagine sitting at a normal computer again, we have one in the house but my lil sis is lumbered with using it

i couldn't have a laptop as my sole computer tbh.

laptops are great for when i'm out and about on a job, showing off stuff to clients etc.

laptops are great for browsing the web whilst kicking it back on the couch and/or bed.

laptops are great because i can put it in my satchel bag inside a crumpler sleeve and no one knows i have a laptop with me, hell sometimes i forget too cause it's fairly light compared to my old 15 inch acer ferrari laptop (biggest waste of money ever!).

laptops aren't great for doing hours or typing, my hands feel wrecked after about an hour of typing.

laptops aren't great for doing photo editing - hear me out on this one. screen size is small i only have 13 inches, touch pads are also a pain to use for prolong times and aren't as accurate as a mouse. although hook my macbook up to one of my 22 inch monitors and a decent mouse and keyboard and i can go for days.

Yeah we have 4 dell vostros here and the missus has a few macbook thingies, so laptops are the in thing.

Currently have a HP netbook and a Dell desktop.

Best combination of what I use it for. Used to a pain bringing my 17'' laptop anywhere.

One is for pure gaming and leisure use.
(You should never mix serious pc's with big games on same pc's - Direct X alone can cause issues)
The rest are networked and used in connection with a specialised international and national WAN databases.

I've been through 3 laptops on my 4th,Though only a netbook i use it all the time my desktop barely ever see's the light of day now

And it far better specced but i'd rather do it slowly on the laptop than quickly on the desktop

I disagree. I've used the laptop exclusively for over a year now. But mine is a 15.4" not 13" - im sure the smaller you get the less comfortable it is. As for photoshop, Doesnt matter when you use a Bamboo-Fun tablet. And I do. If I want a Dual or Bigger monitor setup I just plug into one. Its like Voltron - the more you hook up, the better it gets.

Must say I don't see a reason to go back to a desktop aside from doing really high-end stuff, but my laptop is still as good as/better than 90% of most desktops out there. And when it becomes ragged and obsolete I will retire it as a web browser, media/print server, and/or a WebTV box.

Yeah I'm on my laptop now. Got it for college really. I use desktop computers in college during lunch just because it's easier to eat, since the PCs are already on desks and stuff.

Here's my relationship with laptops and why i don't own one

-Burning the legs off me when i have it on my lap
-Having the charger constantly plugged in because the battery never lasts
-Not enough patience for the poor thing to load
-I hate touch pads, They are so slow and ache the fingers

Ah, if Im doing anything High Performance I do have a Kneepad to keep it on so it doesnt melt me. That and I had it taken in under warranty and told them to fix the cooling so it didnt melt the glue right off of the rubber feet - and sure enough that seems to have worked

Also if you have a laptop with a Flat Side-Vent: They make clip-on external cooling for those.

And a 12-cell battery really helps on battery life, and the bulge is designed as a tilt, so I get better airflow under the laptop on flat surfaces. And I disable tap-to-click on my touchpad: what an annoying feature!

I have 2 laptops and a very small EEEPC desktop, my wife has a laptop and one of our children.

I use one laptop for work, its a 10.2" EEEPC, I have one for home that I use when I'm watching TV but still want to surf the web and have the small desktop on a stool at my side to use for work.

Wife sends me messages and emails, asking for me to make tea, we also use them to play games online.

Bought my current one just before christmas its a HP Pavillion dv5.... love it

I have two laptops. One of them I bought a few years ago is completely outdated a partiot with only 800MHz processor. had it for college years for slow apps like word and the internet.

Currently I have a HP Pavilion dv8387ea for 2 years now. 17 TFT inch screen, 2G ram and a decent 2.2GHz turion 64 processor running xp. Was near top of the range about two years ago and still hasnt fallen too far back. Excellent laptop would get a hp again if I had to.

Why do people think that Macs are so good? My sister bought one at christmas for like €999, I though it was rubbish. I bought an LG notebook with the same RAM and a bigger hard drive for €445. Macs are such a rip off. I think they're for posers TBH!

i really would explain why i use mac but i'm really too tired. just to point out i do use windows too.

ahh **** it here's some of the reasons i run mac.

1. i find the programs i need to use, run faster on mac than on my windows machine. adobe photoshop and adobe lightroom are two of my most used programs, they are much quicker on my macbook than they are with my pc, my pc and macbook have similiar spec's.

2. Xcode, is a programmers heaven tbh. it's such a nicer environment to write code in i haven't seen anything like it on windows that isn't bloated to bits.

3. it's unix based, means i don't have to worry about spyware/malware/virii although these exist in unix, they are a lot less prevelant.

4. keyboard shortcuts, all keyboard shortcuts on macs are universal throughout all applications, in windows it's hit and miss. ctrl+r might do one thing in one app in windows and may do something totally different in another app in windows.

true there are people who buy macs just to pose and just stick windows on it the second they get it, but don't tar every mac user with the same brush.

mac and windows both have their plusses and their minusses and i don't see myself changing solely to one or the other but the whole mac is ****, or windows is **** argument is quite stupid.

Fair enough Creamy Goodness. I take your point. I'm not too much of a techie so I'll speak about people in the same boat as me (people using computers for internet, word processing, storing photos). From my not-so-indepth research it seems that you can get a PC for half what a mac costs with roughly the same specs, which would do most people fine. These people, who spend twice the money for a mac, are the posers (my sister included). :rolleyes:
