Fair sentence?

A 14/15 year old boy set up Gaydar account claiming to be 19 and had consensual sex with 2 men in 40s. Both men got 2 years in jail today for sex with minor. Seems a bit harsh considering consensual nature, the fact many young gay men become active with older men at such an age etc. One of the guys was formerly an actor in Fair City.
When you see some of the sentences handed down for what IMO are much more serious "crimes" you have to question such sentences.
The boy was clearly mature enough to set up an account with a dating website seeking out sex. It's not like a teacher having a gay relationship with a young innocent student.
Are these convictions likely to negatively impact on young men exploring their sexuality? The story reminds me of that gay tv series set in manchester where one of the main guys was having a gay relationship with a 15 YO teen.

Both accused later acknowledged in garda interviews that the teenager admitted on meeting them that he was only 15 years old. They agreed that they were aware that the age of consent was 17.

Can't really say it was unfair when this was the case. If I met a hot girl who told me she was 15 I'm sure I'd be tempted but I wouldn't run the risk knowing the implications.

They're obviously not paedophiles, but they broke the law knowing full well they were doing it. No sympathy

It's stomach turning, a 14yr old is a child. I don't give a fcuk whether he consented or not. I'm very curious to know who this Dunleavy fella is. His name isn't listed on the Fair City cast list. Seemingly he was in tv ads too.

The two men there should only ever leave jail in a body bag. Whatever about the boys intentions, they were the adults in that situation, and knew that they were engaging in sex with a minor. End of.

The heterosexual age of consent was set in the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1935. Well not really. Paedophiles are attracted to pre-pubescent children. Yes. The law's the law. Just because YOU thought he was "da man" doesn't mean other guys (or women) would - a law can't be based on your personal views. A lot of guys object to a grown woman having sex with a young teenage boy, even if it was consensual. And they also object to the "dude, that's hot" attitude which helps legitimise it.

In general, yes, there would appear to be a difference between 14-year-old boys and 14-year-old girls (although whether that's nature or social and cultural conditioning, it's difficult to tell) but not all 14-year-old boys are into a much older woman having sex with them (hate the way it's always assumed all 14-year-old boys would love it) and even those who enjoy it at the time might be ****ed up about it in later years.
You can't legislate based on some 14-year-old boys enjoying it.

Presumably theres precedents whereby he felt he couldn't go any lower than two years...Unfortunately there appears to be a lot that goes on in the legal system that is never explained to the public.

I was a 14 year old boy once and I wouldn't have wanted sex with a middle aged woman, a teenage girl, sure, but I'd also agree the woman from your story should have done time.
