hi
we are looking into prices for bar extensions at wedding receptions. We were quoted 400euro, prices seem to vary from 300-500 but iv been told recently that its illegal for a hotel to charge for a bar extension if its a closed private reception/function. does anyone know anything about this?

A lot of hotels have wedding packages that include the bar extension in the price, maybe look at them? I think in the current climate, you'll be in a good position to haggle, so see will they waive the bar extension fee.

OP, Seriously, why would you even consider having your wedding at a place thats looking to charge for you a bar extentsion

As a previous poster said given the current climate its outrageous that hotels are still trying it on.

Nightclubs and late bars used to charge cover charges to cover their costs for late licenses, around Dublin many places have seriously dropped their prices if even bothering to charge at all!

The hotel is effectively asking YOU to pay for the privilege of them making money from your wedding party at the bar ! JOKE!

Bar extensions are part of being in business, if they cant handle that then they shouldnt be in business. If a venue is trying to pull this stunt then tell them that X,Y.Z venue dont charge so we why are you? Tell them you will take your business elsewhere.

Remember there really is no better time to get the boot into a hotel for your wedding than now as most places are on their knees.

How do I find out if the hotel actually applied for this or are just trying to milk it for a bit more? I plan on asking for a copy when paying the bill, if they don't have it then I plan on not paying, simple as

I dont think theres any question of them not applying for it, they have to, its the law (Unless they want to run the risk of losing their license if caught by the local federáles!)

Its more the fact that they are asking you to bankroll one of their costs of doing business. The bar extension is not your responsibility to pay for. If they want you and your guests to spend money at their venue then the least they can do is cover this cost....its an overhead ffs! If it was cold and they had to turn up the heating would they expect you to pay the extra cost too :rolleyes:

They have said that if I dont want to pay for the bar extension that they will just close the bar on time, that they always apply for an extension as this is the law. I don't know how to go about checking whether they get an extension or not

How far gone are you with this hotel? Are you negotiating or have you got your money down? You can tell them you will pull the plug but realistically they might realise you ae calling their bluff if you have already put down a few grand non-refundable deposit :mad:

All bar extensions are put before the district court, so wherever the nearest one is, you should be able to check. Hope this helps.

Cheers Sizzler, I have a deposit down, not much to be honest, there are hotels closing all around the place at the moment though and there's a lot of double bookings happening, unfortunetly, even with the present climate, it's a seller market

even with all that has been said €300 is still a bit steep. My hotel wanted €200 but I have negotiated that - as another poster said YOU are paying to allow them to make money! ridic

I was talking to a friend of mine in the hotel trade, and he told me that you are entitled to an extension by law, due to the fact that you have had a meal in the hotel. I could be corrected.

anyone else any more info on the legalities of the bar extension??? would be very interesting to know! especially since I had to haggle like a mad woman to get the extension thrown in for my wedding - they made out like i was robbing them blind and they were doing me such a HUGE favour. Would be very interesting to know if they actually can legally charge you or not.

Does it really matter though

They sound like a right high and mighty shower. You are doing them a favour, not the other way around. Hotels have been milking the wedding cash cow for far too long. If people are silly enough to put up with hotels insisting on extras like bar extensions then sure why wouldnt they keep charging.

Im organising a college ball at the moment and the hotel is charging us €500 for an extension until 1.30am. Even tho the event begins at 7pm, caters to over 600 students and most of the hotels rooms will be booked out by us too. What time are most bar extensions until in a hotel in a residental area?
