Ban UFC/MMA from Ireland.

The UFC is here in Ireland soon, this weekend.Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson is topping the Bill.

I was listening o Joe Duffy today and there were callers phoning in calling it a blood sport and proclaiming that its a barbaric sport.

Personally i love the sport i think the concept behing merging the skills of all the various martial arts into one makes for very entertaining and interesting bouts.

Basically i was suprised that there were so many callers with such opinions thinking that it should be banned? Any views?

Note: Ive put this in AH to get an unbiased opinion and perhaps a debate, rather than the Boxing/MMA forums where im sure the opinions would be one sided.

I love seeing all the different fighting styles against each other, i don't mind boxing, but UFC is some much better, For the people that don't like it or want it banned, Just don't watch it then.

What is wrong with 2 people "choosing" to train there hearts out and competing in an octagonal shaped boxing ring which has a fence to hold them in(reason being when the fight goes to the groung too many times than not people will come close to falling out of a boxing ring) its there choice.
I train literally twice a day for MMA, it was originally my choice of hobby but with recent offers and other things it will soon be my career, a job, like a full time professional boxers job is to train and to box......

the "sport" of MMA is hugely regulated and when the UFC is in Las Vegas it is authorised and regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commision(the same commision that regulates boxing) therefore the same strickness if not more regulations are set in MMA. The referee plays a huge role in fighter "safety" if an oponent cannot properly defend himself the referee will not allow the bout to continue as they would in boxing....

These men you will see on Saturday night competing in the UFC are more than likely ALL training full time and MMA is there career, this means hugely intense training every day of the week....i'd like to see any of the uneducated morons who haven't the slightest idea about MMA train this hard.....

I can guarantee if these uneducated people sat down with someone who actually knows the ins and out of MMA and watched a full fight card asking questions regarding what is happening in the cage at the time they would actually change there opinion on MMA completely...........

The people who would want UFC banned are the same people who would want pro wrestling banned (imo there is way more reason to have pro wrestling banned actually).

Legitimate professional athletes competing, what's the problem? It's not like anyone is being forced to watch it or get in the octogon themselves. If people want to compete or watch, that's their choice, if you don't like it just change the channel and leave 'em to it

There are a lot of stereotypes being thrown around here by supporters of this so called sport.

This is a general discussion forum and just because someone takes a contrary view shouldn't mean that they should be subject to abuse.

This sport in my opinion is just an excuse for testosterone fuelled punters to gain some kind of recognition for something most people with common sense would call barbaric.

I love how it takes the big show coming to town for the oh-no brigade to kick up a fuss. The reality is that MMA has been in this country for a number of years. The old Point Depot and the National Stadium have hosted a large UK Promotion. The UFC has been on this island before when it came in June 07 to the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. It's here, get used to it. These people are looking for something to complain about. Where have they been for all of the countless MMA events that have been running legally in this country for years?

Gerry Ryan did a very pro MMA piece yesterday. I actually met him at a UFC show in London last year and he's a fan of the sport. Where's the thread celebrating the fastest growing sport in the world coming to our small city before it makes it to places like New York (Where it's still banned but likely to be overturned very soon), Mexico, Australia, or any European city outside of England. this thing is huge and they're coming here. We should be honored. It attracts massive crowds from outside of the country (loads from North America and England in particular) which will help the citys tourism. But nah, let's stick to moaning. Us Irish are WAY better at that.

No. When it first started out it was a shambles with no governing bodies and no weight classes. McCain wanted it to be regulated which I 100% agree with. It is regulated now. You have to get a license from the commission to fight (which is given after your physical and mental health are considered) and you no longer fight guys bigger or smaller than you unless you're at heavyweight.

Again, spoken like someone who's never been to a UFC event. It's about the most mixed crowd you will find. Wake up call....there are scobes at EVERYTHING.... it's unavoidable. I've found there to be more trouble at your average concert than at a UFC event. I go to on average about 15-20 gigs a year and I've been to 3 UFC events so I'm well placed to make that statement. Your statement on the other hand is pure ignorance based on guesswork and your own misinformed preconceived notion about what the sport is and the type of people who would attend the event.

A few pro-MMA points for your perusal:

The sport's skillset: Boxing, wrestling, judo, muay thai, jiu jitsu, karate; Individually, they're commonplace and no-one questions their validity as sports. Suddenly, when they're all combined, it's savagery and human cock-fighting?

Risk of injury: How many other combat sports can end without a punch being thrown with neither fighter so much as scratched? Anyhow, no-one's being forced to fight, you choose your own level of risk.

The cage: Primarily for fighter safety. At an event that used a ring, I saw an unfortunate Lithuanian almost land in the trophies and medals. With a cage, this can't happen, safer all round for fighters and audience.

The fan & fighter demographic: For what it's worth, here's the audience in my sitting room for UFC 92 - an engineer, an artist:rolleyes:, an Army officer, a financial controller and a Classical scholar.

As for thuggery among fighters, anyone I've met in the sport wouldn't tolerate scumbags in their gym. Of course there wil be exceptions, but for the most part MMA guys/gals are decent people.
