More than likely you can get it. Im over 20 miles away from cork and I can get a perfect digital picture even though the analogue transmission from spur hill is very weak and unwatchable

Hey all, is the signal gone from Spur Hill? I'm getting no signals and no carriers on any of the 4 channels...

Typical that we get the signal for 2 days and now it's gone!

I too am a good bit from spur hill, about 15 miles as the crow flies, i think. Luckily, i currently have a big motherf***er of an aerial on the roof and that could pick analogue ok from Spur Hill before i got SKY. I would like tv in another room though and this looks like the way. Luckily too, i'm gettin a Sony 40w4000(Built in Mpeg4 tuner:D) in the next couple of weeks so if my little knowledge of DTT is correct, i should be able to pick this up:D

For everyone interested. The analogue Terrestrial reception is back perfect here since yesterday , as RTE had indicated. However, I think the way these tests were conducted reflects very badly on our National Broadcaster. They are in the communications business,therefore they should have advertised that there would be significant interference while this testing was going on.Some people were probably climbing ladders to check their aerials unnecessarily and replacing cables etc.If they continue it in the New year they need to relocate the analogue signals for that period. If they don't they are basically saying that everyone effected only watches the tv at Christmas! Come on RTE, you do a great job most of the time,but ye really got it wrong this time.

They gave some notice all right on Aertel Page 169, but I agree they should have done more to notify people.

Anyone know why the analog reception is okay again? The DTT transmissions are still on.

Probably because the new DTT antennas have been fitted and there is no longer any danger of a rigger getting blasted with RF!

Are you referring to Spur Hill in Cork. There doesn't appear to be any DTT life from Woodcock Hill as Widescreen said.

A good quality UHF aerial and a receiver capable of DVB-T/MPEG4 is what you need. No subscription - this is RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4 and radio channels only. This is nothing to do with Boxer or subscription services.

There is a small article on Page 18 of this weeks(10/1/09) Limerick Post headed "Better TV Reception on the way in County Areas"- It has comments by a well known Co.Limerick politician. It refers to poor TV reception experienced by many people prior to Xmas due to DTT testing on the Woodcock Hill Transmitter. It says testing was suspended for Xmas but will be recommencing shortly for a "brief"period. Politician then says that when the testing is finished Set top boxes will be available! This indicates to me that when this testing is completed DTT will be the only way to get perfect "terrestrial" reception in Limerick and surrounds. This goes along with what RTE told me when I initially phoned them about the poor reception in early December that DTT is nearly upon us. Surely they have to keep the analogue service going for a considerable period yet?

Perhaps people in the know out there can respond to this.

It may officially be 2012,but in the case of Woodcock Hill transmitter, I think that once the DTT tests have totally finished and transmitter is working that will be the end of analogue service from there. That's what I gleaned from a conversation with RTE networks before xmas.

Well.. Mpeg4 DTT Boxes are not widely available either here or in the UK.
For the majority of Irish, their first introduction to such a box will be a 'BOXER' box.
And until Boxer release their STB, very few will have access to DTT.

Its quite possible that all of interference caused to analogue will in itself push many towards digital.. but if you were to go down the high street in the moring, what STB would you be able to buy ???? none i imagine.

Also, there hasnt been a peep from Boxer since they won the licence. (have they cold feet... will they hand back the licence)

No Boxer , means no STB's... i dont think RTE will be selling them.

That's nonsense. If it isn't nonsense, then RTE will be in serious trouble with the Government and Comreg.

25% to 30% (more outside cabled areas) do not have Sky/UPC.

Since there is not meant to be a launch of the service for at least another 6months, (and may be delayed) there are not yet set boxes on sale in the street. Most people could not yet receive anything.

DAB doesn't work on old Tin cans, wind up record players or TV generally.

Any Digital TV system can carry channels without pictures. Generally these are feeds of "radio" stations.

They are Radio via DTT. DAB is indeed a separate almost pointless system if you have DTT, as you can infact make an Audio Only portable DTT receiver and it will work better than DAB! Though since DAB uses VHF Band III and DTT usually BandIV/V UHF, the range is a bit better on DAB.

If you have Satellite, and DTT, then DAB for the living room is a bit superflous as you can easily have 20 Radio stations on DTT and I currently have over 1000 on satellite. Of course on DTT, RTE is not likely to have an interesting selection, as they wont in some cases and can't in other cases on DAB. Who knows what Boxer will do.

A specific no-longer current Graphics card and fairly poor results. Still, clever.

Cheapest "real" DVB-T modulator is about 1000 Eur. Then you need transmitter, aerial and a licence.

The penny drops! Noticed really noisy reception from Crosshaven relay at an elevated site in Carrigaline this morning. (Chs 55, 59, 65) . Did not take readings but I can tomorrow. At my home (lower in Carrigaline) RTE 1 &2 are down a bit but TG4 (ch65) is awful. Either CCI from Dungarven or power reduced.
Gonna cause me a lot of hassle!:mad:

Watty are you saying that if you get your analogue directly from Woodcock Hill that (when RTENL start these tests again) you will not have a problem with interference on RTE2 and TV3?

I had assumed that our apartment block was getting its signal directly from Woodcock Hill (and we did have interference before the pre-xmas switch off) - we're in Limerick city centre...

That's what I'm told.

Also the problem can be oveerload in the distribution amp in apartment as the DTT signal is about 10x stronger

Looks like tests have resumed from woodcock hill. Dont get your hopes up just yet though, the signal levels are very weak this time and my receiver wont lock to them.
