When do the results of semester 1 exams normally come out? Will be away for a week in semester 2. Presume you can access them online anyway!

But remember that (for most of you) these are provisional results, until after semester 2 exams has been sat and a Progression and Award Board (PAB) has met. These results will be made final at the PAB in June. So issues such as compensation, etc may not be finalised for some of you until June boards.

So the results we get in February are not set in stone? What do PAB do? Sorry for all the questions, as you can guess I'm a first year student!

I'm in fourth year and I've never had my first semester results change between February and June. I think you only need to worry about that sort of thing if you fail a module or need to compensate. I can't imagine any lecturer sitting around for four months worrying about changing your 53% to 52%!

Sorry for inflating this thread with some negative thoughts but I have some questions about the 1st semester exams too :cool:

What does it take to fail a semester one module? (which I don't intend to do but) I've heard you have to get under 30% 40% 45%.. what is it? I've also heard you have to be in the poorest 10% of the class which might make sense. What's the story?

Also if you do fail, you can repeat the exam at the end of the summer - is this true for all modules? And also does everyone have this opportunity, and can they repeat a few modules if they fail more than one? Does credits matter? I'm guessing your CA mark carries also, and you need to get the same result in the exam to pass.

ok, I'll try to answer all of that...

40% is the standard university wide pass mark and anything below it is a fail. It's also university wide policy that all elements of a module must be passed CA and exam. I'm unaware of any modules using a bell curve marking system. It is true that statistically, in any decent sized class, it is likely that a certain percentage will fail, but this is not the basis of the marking.

It's true for all modules that you can repeat the exam at the end of the summer, but this may not be much help if you didn't do very well in the CA element and it had a large percentage. Specifically, in cases where assessment is 100% continuous, there is no repeat opportunity in the Autumn. The page on marks and standards has essentially everything you might like to know and more, but it's currently under review.

Your CA mark carries when you repeat an exam, but remember that it's university wide policy that you must pass both elements. I'm not sure what you mean by credits mattering though.

Id double check the CA Thing. Last year i was told we could fail either exam or ca but as long as we passed overall.

What course are you in? It's standard university wide policy, but some courses choose to have their own different policy. Engineering for example is one place where you only need to pass overall. In most cases it's best to ask the lecturer to be sure though.

Hmm I wonder. Like, it's only worth 20%. It's not that strange for people to not give CA like that that much attention, so I don't see how they would use anything other than the exam&total grade... Will look if there's an exception.

In an ideal world, all lecturers would make the assessment structure for their specific module absolutely clear on the first day, explaining what percentage is CA and what must be achieved in this.

This said, it's still not an excuse to say the lecturer never explained this, the only way to get a definitive answer on a specific module is to e-mail the lecturer in question.

Failing CA is one of the worst ways of failing, because you have to repeat the year no matter how good your exam grade was, as a result, many lecturers are understanding about this and schedule repeat labs etc if they're asked to. I'd say in 100% of cases, if you're unsure or worried about failing, ask the lecturer for a hand.

yep, they should show up on your portal page at some stage in the day. When is anyone's guess, and it's a fair bet that the portal page will break at some stage, delaying when you get your results.

:eek: last year they said that the results will be at a certain time, but the site OBVIOUSLY was unavailable due to numerous students trying to access the results. GRRR ! do you think the results will be available at 12.00 ?

They are usually available at 12 but there were a few times where
they weren't available until 3.

I have also checked early in the morning around 10am and they have
been there too.

They may have been taken down in order to facilitate putting the results up, or it may just be random stupid downtime...

I can't speak authoritatively, but I would guess the answer to that is not a hope in hell... In the past I've found, as mentioned, results are scheduled to go online at 12, sometimes magically / accidentally appear around 10, and sometimes break completely and don't appear til 3. I would be highly surprised if they became available before 9 tomorrow

Yeah i've been able to get mine at 10/11am before, but then the next time, i couldn't get them until 3. Wish CSD or whoever deals with this part of the portal pages could come up with a better fix for this. They always seem to break down every year
