Just wondering if anyone here has found problems with Xtravision. Now, we've often been guilty of returning movies late but on a couple of occasions I KNOW I've dropped back a movie on time and yet when we go to rent again a couple of weeks later (we wouldn't rent that regular), there is suddenly a late return charge on our account.

Just after Christmas my wife rented 3 movies and asked when they were due to be returned and the guy behind the desk said they were a weeks hire. When we returned them after 5 days the (different) guy behind the desk said they were late, my wife said no way, they were for a week. Dude behind the desk insists they should have been back on the Saturday which was the day she hired them out and when she told him that, he then changed his tune to one of that she had been informed incorrectly and they were only for 3 days hire not a week and it didn't matter what the original guy said!! I told her to complain to the manager but she knows from experience that he is just as bad, so I told her to contact one of their head offices.

Surprise, surprise, when they checked the account, they maintained we had taken out movies for 3 days and returned them 2 days late and anything said by their counter staff was just hearsay! Great to still see such arrogance in a supposed recession. I've told her not to bother with them again.

There shouldn't be any confusion then, and if there is you have evidence to support your argument.

Which Xtravision store was it Dave? I use Ballybane and Oranmore regularly enough without any problem, although I have heard of people being charged incorrectly before.

Movies are usually only 1 night, 2 nights or 1 week. AFAIK There is no 3 day rental scheme. Now I haven't worked there for a while, but it never changed in the three years I was employed. I'd get their head office number and complain. God knows they need a shaking up.

It was the Oranmore one. Used to live in Ballybane and used that outlet but we both had problems there too:(

There is supposed to be a 3 new movies for 3 night deal but then you also have 3 movies for 7 nights as well so I suppose if the staff or busy/not paying attention then you might get incorrect information. Don't even mention their friggin head office as they were the greatest waste of time:mad:

The Oranmore one used to be as dodgey as hell for anything customer service related, though it seems to have dramatically improved lately. Though what you've described sounds pretty petty, it's not as if it's costing them hugely. If you think that's bad, I once returned a non-working DVD due to scratches (new 5.25 rental) an hour after I rented it and was told to fill out some form, and when I requested a replacement I was refused saying they had to check it out with a manager at a later date! I think I've only rented 1 or 2 movies since then and that was months ago.

Yeah.. Went in today and asked about the deals. Very very confusing indeed.

I only mention their Head Office in the hope that they finally have copped on, but as it sounds it hasn't changed a bit.

Best thing to do is go in and give the manager a good bollicking, may not do much, but you'll probably get a free rental (or two) and you'll feel better for venting. Irish people are generally too nice to give out and complain (and I mean proper complain) Only ever happened a few times in 3 years. Of course that is a lot of effort, but it would totally be worth it.

Hey I work in XV part-time, helps pay for me college drinking.

It is IMPOSSIBLE (!) for the system to get things wrong. We just scan in the DVDs and the computer system allocates the rental for x amount of days, depending on:
-How many rentals you got. If you get 5 new releases, you keep them for 5 nights, 4 for 4, 3 for 3 etc.
-Weekly rentals (movies out for 8 weeks) will be allocated as a 7 day rental regardless of how many DVDs are rented at the same transaction

There is a 3 day rental scheme: 3 movies, 3 nights, 11.50 or 13 euro depending on the store. Free popcorn.

My guess is that the experience this customer has had was caused when they picked up 2 new releases, and one weekly rental. The guy at the counter would have probably informed the customer that DVD A and B were for three nights, and DVD C was for a week (that's the older rental). The system DEFINATELY could not say they were due back on the day they were rented, it does not work like that at all. I'd say your experience is down poor communication between your partner and the guy behind the counter.

If you choose to rent at XV again, and for other folk who use XV reading this, in future just ask for a receipt with your rentals. This shows the days each DVD is due in at and can save alot of issues like this from occuring. Sorry you didn't have a good experience. I guess it depends on the store, but my store does actually try to make amends when a customer feels hard done by.

That's not even quite true. In my day I witnessed weird things with, say, 2 new releases (should have been 2 days) and 3 back catalogues (should have been a week) where it all went wrong, etc.

But what regularly happens, and ultimately the customer can't be blamed for this, is when a CSR thinks they've run through for x days but actually the system thinks they're back in y days. It happens.

I don't know how long ago "your day" was, but today, all XV systems are fully automated and the sales assistant has no input whatsoever into decideing how many days a DVD can be rented for.

Couple years back, sonny :pac:

It was automated, but the software was crap and buggy. The software might have been changed but humans still make mistakes as per my second paragraph as far as I know. I think one mistake I remember was having pressed F1 to set a kids' movie out for a week, things got really confused if you put through e.g. two new releases on the same screen. All three would go out for 2 days. That kind of crap software bug.

Oh and for some fun: when on the main 1-7 the main menu, press shift+b to come up with a secret menu

They have changed the software slightly over the last few years so all the problems with renting of multiple DVD's from different charge bands have been fixed.

If she was told she had them for a week then your fine should be cleared. Sounds easy, huh? Well when you do this for a customer you will have every gobs**te coming in off the street saying 'Well I was told they were for a week'. And I know I know that it isn't fair in the customers that have legitimate claims but there are always a select few who ruin it for everyone. Just ask for the manager and tell him what has happened and that it is 'not on'. Talking face to face calmly get you further than going in all gun blazing and blowing a gasket! You may fell like doing this but I see most days people who come in and be sound about get alot more than someone that walks in and goes spa!

Yep, that's about right. I worked in XV on and off for some time out in the Galway SC and the system could be quite glitchy. It's been years but I remember new releases might accidentally get transferred by staff into the old releases section so they ended up going into the system as old releases even if they were new ones.. but basically anyway, most problems were solved by the customer not being a total asshole - which many were. You have alot of power for writing off fines etc., even as a part-time worker, so being nice genuinely would pay off. Otherwise you would just get the 'talk to the manager' speech and the manager of our place wasn't one to listen to any kind of excuse haha.
And Head Office? They couldn't care less about anyone's problems.

Well it looks like Chartbusters won't be an option for long. Has the Galway branch gone into liquidation too? Is everyone there losing their job? I like Chartbusters and their staff are really nice

Xtravision...not so much!

Twice in the last 6 weeks I brought back my DVDs on time. Then some muppet behind the counter says I didnt bring them back the next time I go to rent. The she goes out the back searching and finds the DVD.

I have to say that really pees me off in XV. especsially when they were so ******* cheeky

That's from not checking every night that all DVD's taken in have been returned. There is a report (00's or Security List) that is meant to be done every night to stop this from happening.

My advice: Just download the movies you want to watch, its fee and you dont need to worry about returning them on time. I cant imagine actually paying to watch a movie(except on a very rare occasion that it is worth watching in the cinema).

Xtravision and the like will soon all be fooked. It's almost the same price to buy alot of movies now as it is to rent them and for some people that's still to much when you can acquire for free from the net. Zavvi was the first to go under and I cant see many music/dvd shops still being open after the next 5 years.

Zavvi case is a bit different since their main suppilers had something to do or was Woolworths.

Zavvi was a caught out a bit worse alright because of woolworths but in any case the music/dvd business is declining at a huge rate, the general public are just not going to pay for over the odss for something they can get for free and much more conveniently sitting at their pc.

Zavvi were profitable until EUK hit the fan. Its just not the same watching a downloaded version on a PC/laptop, or through a media player. I still prefer having a hard copy to keep myself...

I just connect my laptop(or play the movies through the xbox) to the LCD tv in the sitting room or the one in my bedroom and download my movies in very high quality and keep my collection on my external hard drive.

as i brought a dvd back i rented the other day, i watched 30 mins of it, n then it jumped to the end, the best part!!!!!!!
wen i brought it back i told the girl fdrom palmerstown the little geek, the dvd skipped to the best part, she said i cant refund u credit note, or give u a different dvd, but i can give u the same one...........does that how that wrk??????

chartbusters is so much better, they dnt complain, n just give u a credit note if any complaint is mad!!

Have to say, taken back loads of DVD's late and I've rarely been charged and the staff at the westside are sound.

Myself and my girlfriend go there about once a week and always find them helpful.
