Comic Storage

I did not see a thread on this so I though I would start one. Does anybody have any suggestions on Comics storage. I only have 4 long boxes (and growing) but the proplem is that I don't have that much room to work with and so I have to stack them vertically and so if I need to get something out of the lower boxes theres a lot of lifting and moving of boxes.

I have seen drawer boxes on the internet, they look good but the shipping charges to Ireland are expensive, anybody know where I might be able to source these in Ireland (probably a long shot!) or does anybody have any examples of ways that they have gotten around this problem?

Unfortunately such problems are one of several reasons I much prefer trade paperbacks to single issue comics. I have some shelf space set aside for singles, and every once in a while I go through the pile to see what's going to get sacrificed to free up space.

I can't help with getting the comic shelves in Ireland, unfortunately, I've only really seen them mentioned and discussed by American fans. They seem a good idea though.

For me, I find a second hand office sale, there are a few around, or check the buy and sell for them, and buy old filing units they work very well. I've bought two so far, but since I've started buying trades I don't seem to use up as much room. Hope this helps.

I had come accross something about using office filing cabinets, do you have two issues side by side? Are the filing cabinets you use standard size? Came accross this pic on the web of a guys comic collection and how he stores it, he must have a big house

Been looking into this recently myself as I've bought a house which means I can see about getting something built. My friend Lee has done that in his house

He put all his single issues into these nice slip cases with the name and issue numbers on the outside - looks really nice.

I think Mr Lee has the best comics collection in the country. But the tidiness of the shelves is a bad sign, does he get read them at all cos y'know i could take some off his hands, as a favor like, especially the bespoke Sinner.

I'll post some of my shelves tomorrow, though nothing nearly as impressive, bit of a DIY job. Why is it that people pay big money for crap assemble yourself shelves when its the handiest thing to build yourself, and couldn't be cheaper; a few planks of wood and some screws.

I found that shelves are always going to be of dodgy quality regardless of buying them kit or making them yourself, really what you need is a carpenter who knows what he's doing.

Magwea, holy c#@p there are some big collections on that forum. However I am not sure I would ever get my single comics bound like a lot of those guys seem to have done. I don't know but I think there is an aesthetic side to single issues that you would lose if you bound them all together.

lol slipcase envy! He made them. I asked him how in case anyone asked and he replied with:

Created a template then painstakingly drew round it on stiff card, cut, scored creased and glued. Then made the spines by photocopying comic logos and spray mounting them to the spine.

Holy moly, good on him. You'd easily mistake them as some store bought professionally made piece of paraphernalia! I really wouldn't have the patience for something like that though. If I cant pick them up at Forbidden Planet, then my comics can stay lonely and unappreciated in my cardboard boxes
