Dell confirms relocation to Poland

Dell is to move its manufacturing operation to Poland early next year with the loss of 1,900 jobs at its Limerick plant.

In a statement this morning, the company said it will migrate all production of computer systems for customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) from Limerick to its Polish facility by early 2010.

This was expected by pretty much everyone, but now it's confirmed. Dell account for 5% of Irish GDP. This ain't good news, that's for sure. How do you think we'll plug the gap they leave?

By actually getting more productive as a workforce, not demanding pay increases for the sake of it, not taking days off as 'sickies', not charging excessively for items and services etc.

A lot more than 1900 jobs, they estimate the final cost of this will be between 10,000 - 15,000 jobs given companies associated with supplying Dell and its workers directly or indirectly.

The Limerick the employees can't walk out with so much as a micro chip without getting caught whereas the security in the Polish site is not as tough, and loads of stuff is going missing. Add to this the fact that the Polish they had over to train went back home and demanded to be paid the same as the Irish workers, not willing to be taken advantage of knowing how well they pay over here.
Screw Dell, I hope it goes tits up for them.

This has been on the cards for a long time, I don't blame Dell we as a country are too expensive for manufacturing. It wasn't a secret I work in the IT industry and its been common knowledge that Dell have been looking around other countries for around 5 years now.

The Government had plenty of time to come up with viable alternatives but haven't. Their knowledge economy spin has no substance at all and we will now pay a heavy price. I hope to god that Intel and HP don't follow suit but it would not be a surprise if they make similar announcements.

So so much more that you couldn't begin to count it. It's not just the 1900, but their partners/dependents... The ripple effect won't be known for months.

I worked there for 15 months before college, my dad works there, next door neighbour too. Aunt used to... Everyone around Limerick could tell you the same story!

Dunno about HP but Intel are going nowhere (at least until Eastern Europe gets to the same 3rd Level Education levels as us). Dell is an exception as the work they were mainly doing is lower tech manufacturing and assembly. I know a lot of guys here in Limerick that worked for them at some point the majority of the work was taking PC and laptop parts and putting them together. No offense to the people that have lost their jobs but that type of work is easily outsourced. TBH how it wasn't moved sooner is a mystery to me.

. ireland just is not competitive enough and our great government is to blame for this. sad day for limerick, lets hope something comes in anyway that can give 500 jobs back at least.

Regarding intel, isn't it true that one of their plants here is standing idle, and that the others haven't been upgraded to produce the latest chips? That doesn't sound terribly encouraging. They might move more manufacturing to Israel.

Get the feeling I'll be watching Reeling in the years in 20yrs time and today will be remembered as the beginning of the end for the big multinationals in Ireland.
