Ever call the emergency services? CONJOINED

Just wondering about this the other day... did you ever find the need to call the emergency services (999 etc... or other when abroad) for any reason?

I've only ever rang them twice - both for road traffic accidents that occured outside my house.
That last time was over 5 years ago though. Hopefully won't have to ring for them any time soon!

So, have you needed to call, and for what reason?

I rang the ambulance once for my Dad... I specifically asked that they didn't turn on the sirens in the housing estate as my Dad had asked this (didn't want everyone knowing he was hurt or something :rolleyes:). They sent a fire brigade first (

) and about 7 firemen stood around saying the ambulance should be here soon. Then an ambulance finally came about an hour later. Both came with full lights and sirens, despite the fact there was no one around....

Other than that, I've never had to ring for anything!

All firemen are paramedics too.

Have dialled 112 twice. First time from my mobile without realising it, heard a noise and picked it up to hear a voice going "Emergency, hello?...." I hung up :P

Second time was because some randomer was banging at our front door locked off his head cursing and blinding, shouting through the letterbox to let him in; and couldn't think of the number for the Garda Station off hand. Not even one ring getting throuhg, they're fantastically fast. Two Garda cars were here in about under 5 minutes as well, not bad for something relatively minor.

When I was working in the airport I called airport police for unattended bags and the like loads of times but also called the fire brigade there because of a fire in a bin (took them 45 minutes and when all that was needed was a bucket of water they brought a jeep, fire brigade, about 6 DAP officers and 6/7 firemen with them). Would have gone for a fire extinuguisher myself but apparently that's against the rules without training.

I've called the guards a pile of times for minor stuff too, like when driving back from a night out (stone-cold sober don't worry) at about 4.30am and almost died because someone had left a pile of roadcones completely blocking a lane. Wasn't getting out and moving them myself cos' I was sure there'd be a gang of scumbags watching and the only person with me was drunk enough to be useless

Once dialled 999 to report a row of wheelie bins that was on fire, the fire brigade arrived v quickly and had them put out in about 3 minutes. Impressive.

Ring the local garda station frequently - there was a lot of building work around where i live and local idiots liked to break into the site at night. I was studying/cramming for exams with my desk by the window so could see them clearly. The first time the phone call went along the lines of:

me: "hi, just wanted to let you know there's some kids climbing on the crane on the building site at xxx"
guard (bored voice) : "uh huh, and what are they doing?"
me: "well, one of them is standing on top of the operator's cab, and another is walking along the top of the arm of the crane....oh, and they're both swinging their jackets over their heads and shouting 'i'm the king of the world'"
guard (no more bored voice): "what the?!?"

Two squadcars and a motor bike arrived in 2 minutes.

For the following few months it was a regular routine, me ringing up "hey, those kids are at the site again" and the guards "right so *my name*, how's the study going? good luck with those exams..."

I rang 999 when I came across an RTA in Wicklow. I had never been along the road before, and it was a dark November night and I didnt know my exact location. The 999 operator started shouting "Where are you" and all I could say was I was about 5 mile from Hollywood on the road to Blessington. Of course that wasnt good enough for him and he said "peoples lives may depend on this". Thankfully a local arrived and spoke to the pr!ck.

This past summer.. a friend tried to commit suicide by throwing herself down the stairs and knocked herself unconscious.

rang ambulance twice and the cops once, one of the ambulance ones was kinda funny.. twas when me and my mates came across an articulated lorry full of pint bottles of bulmers which had gone off the road near abbeyleix, we were the first on the scene, it made "The Panel" the following week and Darragh O'Briain was cracking jokes about kids around laois having bulmers on their cornflakes..

Just to clarify thats all Dublin Fire Brigade firemen are paramedics, down the country they are either First Aid or First Responder trained.

Couple of times..

Had to ring an ambulance for my aunt (she was in labour), they sent the fire brigade first, then the ambulance arrived, my cousin was shouting "but we don't need ye fireman, she's only having a baby!!" (he was 7).

Had to ring the fire brigade numerous times for cars set on fire outside my apartment block.

Had to ring the garda a couple of times for cars joyriding outside my apartment block and once when a bunch of kids were abseiling down the side of the apartment block...

Once, was lost at 6am in Derry on the morning of the marches after my mate went nuts and threw me out of his cousins house. Was wondering the streets for hours and eventually had to flag down a cop car to get to a train station.

Turns out I was picked up on one of the most Protestant streets in the north, could have been killed being from the republic on the day that it was...

Loads of times in work, normal for the job.

I've phoned the local station a few times when i driving at night and come across a drunk driver. Once i stayed on the phone and followed the guy till the squad car arrived, we were heading away from town so i followed him for about 15 miles before they arrived. Although it was 4/5am and very little traffic, i cant believe he made it as far in the shape he was in. He was using the lines in the middle of the road as a guide so drove most of the way with the car straddling the lines.

If you drive alot at night in Donegal, you will see drunk drivers (not as bad now as a few years ago).

none. it was raining and the neon sign on the front went up. The inside was grand. open the next night n all, just with a bit of a smell of smoke. lol sure me mates went in and i stayed outside stating the fact that "eh, the place is on fire!" as the reason for not going in. I'm obviously not as brave as them!

Only rang emergency services once, was for an injury sustained by a fella at a football tournament I organised.

Thankfully I never had to call them before or since for anything.

The local pub landlord rang the local station one time, at 3.30am. There was someone trying to break into his pub via the roof of the smoking area. The guards just told the landlord to just shout at them and tell them to go away!!!:eek: Luckily enough it worked for him.

not really. it was the rain that caused the fire! Apparently some water from the rain leaked into it and caused the spark that set it off!!

Have you ever rang 999? was coming up the N7 a while back and there was a car in the middle of the road on it's roof. People in the car were outside it and ok but it looked like it had just happened fairly recent to me arriving upon it. I put in the call - woman on the other end was very pleasant and thanked me for the call and assured me that police/fire brigade were on the way.

Yeah a couple of times .. (well, 112 .. because .. well.. I'm like that ..).

- someone smashed the windows on my neighbours car and ran off (I rang as they were running off) .. they didn't bother to show up!
- that thing in O'Connell St where the 2 ladies got hit by the bus.. 2 feet behind them I was!

That's really it .. exciting lives we lead ! First time they really didn't seem to want to know on the phone, the second time they were eager to get lots of info.

my friend works in the control room in tara street were all the calls come in too and he has a few storys but the main thing is to keep the people on the phone and get as much info as possible
