UTV Launch Flat-Rate Internet Package

UTV Internet today launched voice and internet services to Irish consumers, becoming the only Internet Service Provider to currently offer flat rate access. The new services will be available throughout Ireland. They will provide consumers with savings of 25% on eircom call rates for local, national and international voice calls and off peak internet access (evenings and weekends) for a flat rate of €29.99 per month.

Dunno if it's just me, but the signup buttons (which only link to a PDF doc as far as i can figure) don't appear at all in Netscape 4.74. They do in NS7 and Mozilla 1.1

just afer connecting, first time, for my first time with UTVip. Very happy so.

Their join process, creates a windows installer file on the fly, already set up with your own unique username and password. No need to change anything. Just double click it ... it was far too easy.

I've also just connected with UTVip. Had a bit of trouble with my CLID. UTV informed me in the email to add 142 13513 to the standard UTVip number to enable CLID, but it wouldn't dial at all with that prefix, so I tried just adding 142 and it worked a treat.

Hi,

If users have their callerid permanently withheld they must use the 142,13513 prefix before dialing our 1890 dial up number. By adding the 142 prefix alone routes the call to Eircom and will be charged by Eircom at standard 1890 LoCall rates.

Try dialing the number from your handset and see if you can hear the modem tones.

If this does not work you will have to get Eircom to lift the hold on your outgoing CallerID to use the UTVip 1890 dial-up number successfully.

I agree for those two sites, the ping stats weren't optimal, I'm sure over time UTV will be able to sort it out.

In fairness though, it was two sites that were picked out to be not so good with UTV.

The speed on UTVip at the moment seems pretty awful at my end, it says that I'm connected at 44,000 bps but it feels more like 28k. When I'm online there seems to be a constant stopping and starting of the connection, with small periods of total inactivity evey few seconds and download speeds of around 1-2k - I thought UTV had sorted out this issue in the past. Although this may just be trouble at my end, My Elivefree connection seems to be working much better. Hopefully this'll sort itself out in the next couple of days, I've had trouble like this before on UTV's free service and it usually doesn't last too long.

Just to clarify, it's not that the connection is slow, it's more like it's a fast connection that's constantly starting and stopping.

I've noticed this too and I had to d/c & switch to another ISP. Hope you guys can sort this out

They'll kinda have to, now that they've got a shedload of whining subscribers to pacify

I'm still confident that UTV was a better choice than EsatBT though, and I'm sure they'll get it sorted.

There are now two viable solutions for pepople who want something close to FRIACO; ESATBTs NetSmart and UTVi.
As I see it, UTVip has two drawbacks:-

- no connectivity to INEX
(and low connect speeds reported recently)

- the requirement for CPS (which is a hassle)

I'd welcome the opinions of Scott or Martin regarding these points.

and it's chronically slow on ISDN

pings are more than double what they used to be and I'm getting 4k/s downloading from a server that I get 7.5k/s from on eircon.

Anyone else having problems?

well i didnt sign up for utvip but i tried their pay as u go service tonight
200-300 pings to irish servers
5.5 kbs download speed
u would think i have 56k but no i have isdn
very poor proformance
i guess their having a few problems which u would expect with any new service but scott said in the other tread that they had plenty of bandwidth and their wouldnt be problems like this

Hmm, things seem to be looking up a bit... after 12 the connection speed jumped to perfectly respectable levels. I'm getting between 4-5k/s downloads on my trusty 56k, and everything seems generally okay. Probably just because everyone's off to bed, but definitely an improvement.

I hope they do get it sorted. This is worrying when they only have a few people activated, what will it be like shortly when the rest of us are also trying to get on!
This is the very reason I am leaving Eircom, slow connection and often unable to dial in and disconnected, being charged min call charge at every attempt. I dont fancy paying €30 pm for the privelege.
