Do you think American women are butch?

I'm an American living here in Ireland, and the "Do you feel European" thread inspired me and my American roommate to discuss how "European" Dublin feels. We decided it does feel European, mostly because the men are more metrosexual. She added that everyone here is more feminine than in the States, both men and women, which led us to wonder: Do American women seem butch to the Irish?

And why is it that Irish men do that clamming up thing? I'm not loud, but I'm pretty outgoing, and sometimes if I try to strike up a conversation with a local they react like they've never seen a woman before, let alone heard one speak. Are they just shy or am I violating some core social code?

Cork and Dublin have so many girly men... Unbelievable amount. But this is not a fair representation of our country. Go to the Glen of Imaal and have a few pints... Well, for many fellows (and this would really apply to many of us rural fellows), when they encounter someone really outgoing and, say, "flamboyant" then they will shoot back into their shells. It isn't what they are used to. "Flamboyant" can be simply being a "foreigener":).Without the comforting blanket of alcohol, assertiveness (or even plain friendliness) can be unsettling. At least that is how many Americans are thought of. For many Irish, there is a degree of bullsh*t and ritual one has to go through before being accepted. Anything different can result in clamming. In my opinion of course.

Your use of Munster culchiespeak confuses me as a native of Connacht culchiespeak. I understand your sentence, but use some different terms.

Since however Connacht Irish pronunciations are universally* acknowledged as being the definitive ones, as opposed to the weird Munster ones, I extrapolate that your use of Munster culchiespeak is also flawed.

I don't really do culchiespeak in print though.
