Buy now while shops last...........

Started my Christmas shopping today in Cork and the amount of shops closed down or closing down was incredible, I thought they'd stay open until Christmas anyway. The same goes for the small towns around here too, has anyone else noticed this?

Dunno about Cork, but loads of the little shops in Dublin, especially around Grafton Street, have closed down.....
Try the markets instead maybe? There's a great 12 days of Christmas market in Dublin, I'm sure there's something similar in Cork where you can buy your presents.......

Yeah I certainly have had no problems with shops I wanted to buy in closing down. I was in town today and I didn't notice a disproportionate amount of closed down shops.

A lot of the specialist shops down side streets are gone and a lot of shops in the shopping centres are either gone or have closing down sales.

There's a few shops with 'closing down' sales in Henry st/Inside Ilac in Dublin.

Now, whether they are really closing or just a sales tactic is anyones guess!

A small town near me has taking a big hit even before recession talk. There is now no DVD store where there was 3, no mens clothes shops where there was 3. only 3 small grocery stores where up until about 4 or 5 years ago there were several. The new Tesco and Super Valu could explain the closure of the smaller shops but it has taken away from the atmosphere of the town....

"Closing Down Sales" can last for ages though - JeanScene on Patrick St. had one that lasted about 2 years before they finally packed up!

It's a reality check really, costs are too high in Ireland and we can blame the EU for a lot of this and our own government for bringing in the taxes and few of the benefits, it's impossible to compete with the rest of europe if we're not on a level playing field and by the looks of things to come we never will be either.

Was talking to a guy who worked in Harvey Norman's today and he thinks that they'll be pulling out of Ireland in the New Year. If a big name like that is in trouble then i guess the little shops must be up **** creek also.

That wouldn't surprise me. For the amount of ground space they take in a store I know of, there is very, very few customers in it every time I have been in it.
