They used it to go on a massive spending spree and add further fuel to an already overheating economy at the expense of those who couldn't afford to put money into an SSIA to avail of the government's largesse. Just think of what the government could have done with all that extra cash instead of buying votes with it. Must have been worth a couple of extra hospitals and a shed load of schools at the very least.

Here's the reality... the money is not there - the governement have to make cuts - so what section do they make cuts which will prevent an uproar - answer there is no section.

Enda Kenny suggested that the government should get rid of the national pay package - how many people here support that idea??? This is the oppositions idea not the governments.

Michael Martin was subject to abuse when he brought in the no-smoking in pubs back a few years ago - everyone said it won't work - this is a joke etc. now nearly everyone even the smokers agree that was a great move.

Mary Harney was a PD.

I'm delighted FG aren’t in government to be blamed for the mess that has been created courtesy of the grade A **** in FF.. And im also pretty happy that were in a recession because it’s exactly what most of the idiots in Ireland deserve. This country has no STANDARDS! Politicians can do whatever the hell they want and the masses will be thinking ''isn’t bertie lovely''. There is no accountability because everything is 'grand'.

As for the Enda bashing[im from Dublin btw], pure ignorance..how can you call Enda Kenny a joke w/o taking a serious look at the ministers in our current government.

Brian Lenihan....Mary Harney....Michael Martin...Mary Hanifin...Willie O Dea... to name but a few of the planks.

But of course all the working classes, ff grass roots, builders/developers & nouveau riche idiots will always vote ff,
and so the real middle class in Ireland will always lose out.

Political positions should be filled in the same way that football teams are put together. Professional politicians should be valued on performance and their services retained by those countries willing to pay the going rate. Unfortunately, poorer countries will end up with complete **** running their systems. Oh......................wait a minute................scrap that, I'll think of something else. :eek:

historically its nearly always been FF since the beginning. People have these misconceptions 'oh the fine gale are blueshirt nazis' 'oh 40 years ago labor did this wrong' etc. Thing is if there was a decent 2 non fianna fail part coalition it might actually work.

Wont be voting ff or the green party next year (sell outs!). Wont be voting any party. Just for the right PERSON. If there were no parties in government it might actually work better.

Most of those seats were picked up at the expense of the PDs and independents, not FF, so that suggests that people had less of an issue with FF than was thought at the last election. If there was an election now however, FF would struggle badly and probably lose seats to FG.

This just doesn't tally with the twenty seats they won in the last election! Show me where voters said they didn't pick FG cause he is boring and you might have an argument.
I think Bruton is interesting too, but I haven't heard of any dissent in the party, or plans for a coup to install him as leader-everyone is happy with their roles at the minute and they should be. I've seen Kenny speak and while he's no great orator, he's no slouch either. Again people are just seeing what they want to see, he's well capable of ripping into the government when he feels like it.

They have sullied the names of the great politicians of the past who fought for Irish freedom. And as the party is steeped in corruption how can we trust them with our country, especially during this crisis?

Richard Bruton, on the other hand, is articulate and has a personality, so people give him more of a chance. Kenny's dullness is genuinely harming his party's chance of winning the next election.

As for why I'd vote FF, for the brown envelopes, of course. Unfortunately they've gotten a bit smaller of late. Damn recession!

I'm saying that after the failed election with noonan at the helm people thought the party would die. So yeah I am serious. Well lets give this a quick run down, due to Workers Unions in this country - Cutting the numbers of people will mean paying them huge sums of money - money which is not there at the moment so thats not really an option

e-voting may have been a disaster - but whats the solution - are you sayin to just dump them somewhere - think of the backlash then.

Why don't we just scrap the national pay packages which have this country on its knees - O wait didn't FG purpose this and it was shot down - of course it would be shot down - the greedy public don't want to lose money. It probably one of the few FG purposals that i would support.

I also love the way all the above doesn't really affect the general public, as each of the above sections have their own budgets which hardly affect the average joe.

People seem to vote for these people because it's traditional, like the ones heading off to church on a Sunday. They also assume, for some odd reason, that the descendant some guy with a gun in 1922 must be a great politician because his ancestor was in the right place at the right time.

I remember some local electioneering wannabe knocking on my door, then telling me to vote for him because his father was a councillor.

"So fucking what!" was my reply.

Would our current Finance Minister have been elected, were he not a member of some political dynasty? (he's supposedly the 2nd worst finance minister in Europe, only being ahead of the Portuguese guy.)

How many more of these dynasties are there, and are any of the present contenders any good? I'm not just referring to FF, the same situation exists within the other parties.

Ah yes another thread which seeems to think its Fianna Fails's fault that everything is going wrong financial... you gotta love you people. the reason for the state of the economy in ireland is the people's greed and nothing else.

People is this counrty thought that money grew on trees and the spending it would make no difference, now that we are in a recession, people have no savings, are up to their necks in debt and are trying to blame someone so they choose the government.

What would any other government do different.
