another thing thats bugging me about all petrol stations is price of oil per barrell has shot down in recent months not just weeks but yet its 119 cent at pumps has anyone noticed this ?

and yes its refreshing to hear people defending oil industry new one for me i reckon you're right noone has boycotted Shell hehe but look at it this way it was nice spin to give to execs for falling numbers at stations probably .Who knows but thats a fact i heard that from reliable source i know it is 100% true .

If it was true, why bother setting up a new company, why not just rename the old one. Shell is still registered in Dublin CC and Topaz in Clonskeagh, with statoil registered in the IFSC.

Topaz is owned by an Irish private equity firm called Ion Equity. They bought Shell and Statoil in 2005/2006 and rebranded as Topaz.

Well if it was true, it'd make sense to set up a new company. Changing the name of the current one won't fool anyone. But if Shell is still around, but it sets up a new company to take care of the retail part and takeover statoil too, then very few people will see the connection and just presume it's someone else.

I don't know if it's true or not, but it'd make sense if Shell were losing money because of bad publicity.

I haven't seen 119 since a week or two after the budget. When the budget came out it went up to 124, but was quickly brought down again

good points made there folks i've just checked the price of oil per barrel and its 87.50 usd per barrel that translates to a way cheaper price per litre in pumps stations around country in my reckoning it was 100 USD per barrel only 3 or 4 weeks ago but prices are not coming down much in petrol stations .Anyways thats beside the debate on Topaz the petrol stations are at the end of line puppets for oil companies scrounging to make a living .Ireland needs to wake up we need to start making our own bioethanol and biodiesel and start giving some competition to these monopolies in oil industry .One only has to look at amount of money Shell dished into alternative fuels and sustainable energy before we know it the same people that controlled oil will very soon control the sustainable energy market and the we're back to square one again either that or everyone starts making it in their back garden and just two fingers the whole world governments but that would not be nice and poor oil company execs would be on the dole shudder the thought

I see Farva has some good lead on who Topaz is well ION EQUITY is private investment company on behalf of external investors so who pumped money into ION EQUITY to buy Shell and Statoil isn't that the next logical question we have to ask as irish citizens and tax payers .Are we looking at another case of corruption hidden behind private investment company .Anywhere i see private investment companies popping up begs the question why can't the investors just setup public company WHAT HAVE THEY TO HIDE that is so important to hire private equity company to buy their stake in Shell and Statoil

Your source is completely wrong! Topaz are based upon what used to be Shell (and Statoil) but it has nothing in terms of ownership to the Shell.

The competition authority investigated the purchase of Statoil by Topaz (who had by then already owned the old Shell outlets) and (because of a total feck up by the CA) nothing was found.
However, I don't see Texaco or Esso legging it just yet. Furthermore, Tesco are cheaper than Topaz!

No, they have absolutely nothing to do with Royal Dutch Shell plc. They purchased from them a subsidary, Irish Shell Limited, which operated the filling station and home heating oil business. This was a completely seperate operation to another subsidary, Shell E & P Ireland Limited, who are the ones involved in the Corrib gas project.

Really, they should not have been let buy both Shell and StatoilHydro's Irish business. However the Competition Authority messed up, by failing to make a decision on the takeover of Statoil Ireland by Topaz Energy within the required deadline, which meant the deal was deemed automatically approved.

That's exactly it. The shell and statoil brands, despite having nothing to do with the shell pipeline bull****, were a bit damaged. The Topaz brand was unknown and had the opportunity to make a clean slate. Which they've done very well IMO.

Although I don't think the ridiculous amount of tax that's on petrol (74c a litre) should be overlooked, I think that's a fair point about the racket.

Even in the UK, just a week or so after the prices started falling, all the major players like Tesco and Sainsburys and others (who all sell petrol in the UK too) started a price war, which was started by one of them suddenly dropping their prices.

Unfortunately over here as far as I know Tesco is the only chain supermarket that retails in petrol too.

Well I was in London last week and petrol was about £1 a litre, diesel was almost £1.10. We're not doing too badly by comparison.

You are wrong basically because the majority of the price is made up of goverment taxes and VAT on the taxes. This being Ireland, the government dont charge a percentage duty on fuel, instead they charge a fixed sum per litre(60 - 70 cent I guess) The vat is a percentage alright I think but with this being the case, ever if the oil companies were giving oil away, it would still cost us 70 cent or so do to tax
