McSwiggans (nice grub and you can also find an out of the way spot)
Taafe's (cool mix of tourists, auld lads and students)
Freeneys (pure auld man pub, great pints)
Tobar/Dew Drop (nothing better than beside the fire in the winter)
Front Door (good atmosphere when not too packed)
Sheridans (best pint in Galway)

Monroes is easily the best pub in town - and that's not just cause I'm a Celtic fan

great food, reasonable prices (compared to other places anyway), really nice looking pub plenty of seats, gd number of bar staff, great craic when there's a band on etc. Never seen any trouble in there either. Also received a few pints on the house which is an instant winner

I went to the Front Door last Friday and it was loud as ****, I've had easier conversations in night clubs like! Then the next time I was in there some black chap smashed a pint glass over someone else's face and then our mate passed out at the blood and took about 6 pints with him. Memorable I suppose!

Hole in the Wall is good if you're a student. Cheap pints and a dance floor and whatnot.

Liked Monroes the first few times I was there but there was one ignorant guy working there last time I was there & I won't go back ever since.. Was in a bad mood & was just so rude to everyone.... GrrR! Anyway back to the thread..

Worst put ever has to be the Front Door - cattlemart or what!

Bierhaus - hard to beat a bottle of 'bitter and twisted' or 'old speckled hen'

Taafes - love the snug area
Tonerys - Loved it for a few pints when i lived close by
O'Connells - Usually a great atmosphere
McSwiggans - always good for a quiet pint
Hughes - Great Guinness & occasional horseracing tips...

Not living in Galway anymore but when I go home Neachtains is a must. Followed by Front Door, and Blue Note.

In last weekends Guardian Travel Supplement Neachtains is listed in the top 10 traditional Irish pubs. A dying breed of irish pubs that are a must.

Was in Neachtains last night and had what was by the far the best night out I've had in 3 or 4 years.

Chad Dughi was playing a fair well gig and earlier on a couple of younger guys were playing. The singer had the most haunting voice I've heard in a long time. He/they are launching a cd in the town hall tomorrow night. Definitely going.

The last few Tuesdays seem to have been brilliant in Neachtains. I think that may be their muso night again. I missed last night, but last Tuesday Niceol Blue was playing for the whole night.
It was a pretty amazing set. I think she is doing more, hopefully. There were heads in there that I haven't seen in years!
Would be lovely to see a regular varied music night with solid musicians each week again. Last week, actually got prime seats early but the place got packed.

Now that the 'riviera' weather is gone, good that they enticing us indoors

I dunno why people head to Neachtains (inside), its a ****ing shoe box. It is literally the smallest pub in the world. I wouldn't bother. Mean while, I'd like to state that the Blue Note is the best pub in Galway. Not only for its quality smoking area and layout but because it usually has a decent DJ on the night.

I'm with you on the Blue Note, I'm usually there at least once a week and although the DJ seems to play the same tunes every night I've never gotten sick of them.

Neachtain's is cool too, if you're not terribly bothered about standing. Quality gypsy jazz on thursdays and sundays too (or is all that over now?) Anyways, getting the snug is Neachtain's is like winning the lotto

9. The Front Door (great atmosphere if you avoid it on weekend nights)
10. O'Connell's (all the better since the addition of the new bar in the beer garden)

Massimo. Purely for the snottiness of the majority of the bar staff there.

Right, got to put the older-person view in:

The Crane - for the trad
Roisin Dubh - for other music
Murphys - at 6pm, everyone in the bar shuts up and watches the news on TV
Arus n nGael - 'cos it's just sooo weird to have an "irish club" in Ireland
The Cottage - for the beer selection
O'Connells Eyre Square - for the kitsch factor in the back rooms
Monroes - strictly for the pizza
Tigh Coili - for sheer volume of music played
Garavans - 'cos it's quiet on the nights when the rest of you are out partying

Love taaffes, since I graduated i never seem to be out on the pull very depressing as somehow I seem to be a target for old men in pubs and of course can never tell them to go away and end up chatting to them
