Gardai are to be issued with pepper spray.

It has been reported that the Gardai are to be issued with Pepper spray as an alternative sourse to carrying arms or tazer guns. This measure has been brought in because of the increasing attacks on unarmed members of the force.

I agree that this is better choice than issuing certain members of the force with lethal weapons nevertheless I believe that this new measure must be very closely monitored.

In the light of this perhaps the Government can now relax our ridiculous drinking regulations in line with any normal western civilization and at the same time claw back much of its badly needed revenue.

Garda hierarchy & internal investigations and the Garda Ombudsman tend to ruin Garda fun with new toys.

When is the last time you, or anyone you know, has had a Garda do anything more than give them a raised voice or a "stand back there please"?

It takes a fairly extreme set of circumstances for the Gardai to even take out their batons. They're hardly going to be using this stuff liberally.

The benefit of pepper spray is that it allows you to disable a violent arrestee without having to get involved in a scuffle - with a baton, you need to put yourself at risk.

I know a few garda and they all have power issues. Doesn't bother me about them using pepper spray, just think they will use it too freely.

the other thing is that its not like the good old days when your average copper was a great hulking bacon 'n cabbage savage. Most of the current lot are itty bitty gardettes and gardeenies, they probably need all the equalizers that they can get

Most Garda are good people and they need some kind of defence...but so do women, children and old people, should we not give them some pepper spray as well?

Pepper spray could very easily be abused....I'm going to say no, don't give it to them....just put more Garda on the streets...

Ok you say it's been introduced to deal with "increasing attacks on unarmed members of the force". Then you go on to say that it has to "very closely monitored".

Why?

A Garda carries the extendable ASP baton at the moment that is more than capable of splintering an elbow or indeed delivering a fatal blow. On the other hand all pepper spray will do is incapacitate you. Stop implying that this is some sort of draconian measure that's going to allow the Gardai to assault normal decent people all over the place.

It's nothing of the sort. It's a long overdue measure that might go some way to redressing the imbalance between the Gardai and the people who'd wish harm on you.

In fairness I'd have sprayed "shelwanda" too. Did you count how many times he asked her to put her hands behind her back and she resisted arrest?

That wasn't an abuse of power. It was a cop with patience up holding the law. He asked the girl about 60 times to put her arm behind her back and then she bit him, so he pepper sprayed her.
