If you were to be executed, could you walk to the gallows?

Just watching something on RTE, some film where a lad was being executed by guillotine and walks up the steps no bother and nods at the executioner, a few lads help him into the guillotine and away he goes.

If this was happening you, say it was 120 years ago in Dublin and you were being hung or executed in public for murder or treason or whatever, could you accept your faith and calmly walk up to your place of execution and stay composed until the deed was done or would you be one of those people that needed ten people to drag you kicking and screaming up to the rope???

I think I'd be the latter...

In reality i think i'd do that before i was hung.

Ya'd like to think you'd be all composed, and could make an empassioned speech which would stir the crowd and make them feel bad about my death, and then lead to the downfall of the tyrannical system that had killed me... in reality though i would probably sob out some pathetic whine which nobody could hear then lose control of my bodily functions, collapsing on the gallows in a pool of my own waste. People would react to this with disgust and actively support the tyrannical damn good regime which put me to death.

If it was the guillotine, then I would not be a happy camper as one dr in a weird experiment back in the 1890's I believe found that the bodyless head appeared to be conscious for several seconds if not longer. Oh yep here it is... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillotine#Living_heads That would be a very very long several seconds to the condemned. Under moments of high stress the mind stretches time. Shudder doesn't begin to describe it.

In the case of hanging, then I'd be happier, but only if it was the proper long drop method. In that case it's like decapitation but the shock of the drop is likely to cause deep coma then rapid brain death. IMHO it's the most humane way of execution. The oul lift them up from the ground a la the mad mullahs in Iran is not a pleasant way to go at all, unless you're very lucky and you conk out fast from shock(same with old style kick away a box from under the victim).

If I was being hanged for releasing a spoken word record of my extreme right wing political beliefs i could definitely walk up to the gallows.

(ws actually going to say 'for ireland' but that's so old fashioned)

If i felt i deserved the death penalty (which is unlikely), I'd like to think I'd be all calm. If not, I'd be doin my damnedest to take as many of the b*stards as i could with me.

Kicking and screaming, crying, I'd put a pox on all their houses, I'd bite anyone involved if possible, I'd curse every fupper in the room, find God, make deals with the devil and mess myself if all else failed.

Kicking ans screaming all the way. I get to tell people what I think of them before I die and have a right old laugh doing it. Plus everyone releases their bowels when they die, no amount of dignity before hand will prevent that.

best thing to do then seeing as you dignity is doomed anyway is to request to be executed in the nude so sombody has a good auld mess to clean up after your gone.

Sure it's fine. Just remember to ask for the more popular vowels first like A or E and once you've filled in a couple of blanks try the more difficult consonants. There's probably an S in there too and V is more popular than you'd think.

Don't worry though you get plenty of chances before the rope goes over your head and when you get it right you get freed by the executioner, 5 guineas from the warden and an hour with the Governor's daughter. Piece of cake really.
