Fans sue hotel over GAA final.

"A Five star hotel is being sued over claims it refused to show last months All Ireland Gaelic Football Final.
Lawyers have served notice on the Hilton Hotel in Belfast that damages are being sought following allegations that staff told customers the Tyrone vs. Kerry match would not be screened.
The action ahs been brought by two men who say it was an affront to their dignity and national identity.
One, Brian Corey (51), claimed he was informed by staff on the day of the final, which Tyrone won, that it was the hotel's policy not to show GAA matches.
"I was mortified. I just thought this was a terrible injustice and so embarrassing to be treated like this" said Mr. Corey. "My sense of nationalism was offended".
The Hilton said the GAA final could not be shown because a Premier League soccer match between Chelsea and Manchester United-which the hotel had linked to a food and drinks company- was already being screened. It is understood Mr Corey, from the Lower Ormeau area of South Belfast, has also brought the allegations to the attention of the GAA's Ulster Council and to the sport's governing authorities at Croke Park in Dublin.
Mr. Corey's solicitor, Seamus Leonard, said: "I have formally written to the Belfast Hilton and I have been in touch with the legal department of the Hilton Group in London".
But a spokesman for the hotel denied all the allegations and said "A request was received at the Belfast Hilton to switch the TV channel from the Premiership match to the All-Ireland Gaelic Final.
"Unfortunately, we were unable to accomodate this request. This had been well-advertised during the previous months and on the day" he added.

WHAT the hell is this bollocks? "national identity" "the sport's governing authorities" its a match. think Ireland may be starting to follow America's "sue for everything" mentality?

being someone who couldn't give a toss about sport in any form, if i happened to be looking for a hotel room on the day of some huge sporting event and i heard there was a hotel that refused to show sport, well they'd have a booking from me. for that guy to say that a hotels refusal to show a poxy match is some sort of affront to his nationality all i can say is speak for yourself pal, i am a 100% green-blooded proud paddy who wouldn't watch a GAA match if you paid me ,BORING zzzzzzzzzzz.

To be fair the person in question was a guest of the hotel and it can only be assumed that he had made a purchase(s) in same. He should have been reasonably accomadated. I'm sure there are numerous TV's in the hotel. One of them could have been switched over to the GAA. I'd be fairly annoyed if I was staying in a hotel on All Ireland weekend and couldn't watch same. That being said I wouldn't go to the trouble of suing.

I have friends who tell the story of being in Dublin during and All Ireland Final and not being able to get the match on because Celtic and Rangers were playing.

This is rather funny considering how the Hilton in Kilmainham, ran ads in The Kerryman newspaper promoting their special deals for the All-Ireland, of which I duly took up!

It was real bad form by the Hotel and that match was the biggest sporting event in the Island of Ireland in 2008 and is annually. It seems as if some bigot is in charge there and it was done deliberately to p1ss off the Catholic viewers of GAA there. Because I'd imagine it would not have been Hotel policy for sure, if it is then it represents a terrible business policy.

GAA is one of, if not thee only sport in the world where you can't represent your country at a national level. And whether your unionist or nationalist makes no fiddler's fúcking difference.

GAA serves no purpose other than to turn to when the Irish soccer team fúcks up repeatedly.

In my experience, in Northern Ireland, the GAA fosters bigotry and sectariaism and it's an association that I would be ashamed if it had anything to do with my 'identity'.

The hotel policy was made clear in the OP:

I hate to break it to you but we don't all live there. Some of us 'liberal idiots' choose to move to liberal (read FREE) countries where no one forces us what to watch, how to think and what to fell.

They had no right to expect to watch the GAA match, they can ask the hotel if they mind putting it on or not, but there is no requirement for them to have to put that program on or not. Even if it had been an advertised event being shown, such as the soccer that was on, and they ended up not showing it there would still be no case to biring for that not being on. Unless they were maybe charging ticketed entry for watching the game, but thats just daft and you'd only get the ticket price back and be told to find another bar somewhere to watch whatever it was.

This is the absolutely the stupidest thing I have ever read here, and that's saying something. Whenever I want to watch a match, Football, Rugby, whatever, I always think how nice it would be to go to my local sterile, prawn sandwich serving Hilton hotel. I would much rather that than my local, which will be filled with guinness drinking beer bellied people who will just get rowdy and shout encouragement or insult at the TV as required.

I mean, a global hotel chain is the obvious place for a passionate fan isn't it?
