Ok looking for your views on this.

As you know we're opening tomorrow night in City West and we were discussing rake for our cash games and what would be the best way to rake.

1. Rake the Pot at x€ P/hr

2. x% of the pot (with a limit)

3. Time charge of x€ amount per player per half hour.

There are pros and cons for each. I prefer options 1 and 3. While option 3 is not the norm, I think it will be more transparent.

1. If some players are away from the table for say 15 mins having a smoke the other players on the table have to pay their share of the rake.

people should be charge to rent the seat, I.e fee per hour. In that way a room manager can figure out when players will leave the table and players will wait till there time is up before leaving.

This can be easily control on a spreadsheet etc.

Other options mean the better players end up paying for the game

Either pp/ph like in the casinos, or else 10% of pot with €5 being the max for 1/2 like vegas cardrooms do it. At ~25 hands p/h the average rake per pot this way would only need to be €3 to work out the same as option one at a full table. Also, this will probably take in slightly more rake as long as the game is dead as you still work by pot size, not by number of players. I'm not particularly a fan of option 3 myself.

Edit: Option 1 and 2 are essentially the same, except in a bigger/not full game the house can make more on option 2, and maybe a bit less on a terrible game.

a) easiest for you for keeping records etc, very few players will notice. This should always be done at a % of pot anyway ie - €1-2 when the pot hits €20, 1 more when it hits 50, 1 more when it hits 100.

b) if its a good game taking a % will be bad for the player if its a bad game itll be bad for you. Its a cardinal sin to take rake after the river as players are far more likely to notice it. Which would obviously be a must in a % rake charge.

c) Time charge, good for the player but as already mentioned most players dont realise there is a rake and will start complaining, you will also lose players when the rake is due whereas theyll stay longer if they dont notice it being taken.

My advice is keep it in tune with how the other card rooms in Dublin are doing it. As a rule people dont like change and I can imagine a lot of tears when Johhny Drunkard figures that nowhere else makes him pay a time charge. Obviously just ensure the dealers are aware of when the pot should be raked as Bohsman has already pointed out.
I played a lot in Oz with the hourly time charge and it regularly hampered the game and did nothing to discourage it from breaking.

For this weekend it will be option 1,

Rake
€1-€2 = €4 pp/ p30min
€2-€5 = €5 pp/ p30min

JP my vote would simply be DO NOT USE OPTION 3!!! by far and away the most cons for this option for both you the operator and the players..

Just came across this thread now and I have to ask why on earth would any player vote for Option B? This is by far the worst value for the player. Glad to see you went with the tried and trusted method JP. It really bothers me when I play at certain events and they charge a % of the pot, meaning that in a game with lots of action and big pots the house can screw the player for 2 or 3 times more than they normally pay. The fact that any of the poker event orgnisers who voted chose this option speaks volumes imo.

OK, I think I get this. Option 1 is a time rake - where the rake is taken from the pot instead of from individuals pockets?

Can this work practically? I can see a case where lots of small pots are played early in the hour, so a small bit of the required rake will be taken, and then the dealer may need to compensate near the end of the hour by taking a bigger chunk of the pots to reach the required rake amount for the hour.

Or have I gotten it completely wrong?
