Travellers On Carrickpherish Road.

Whats the story with the travellers out on the Carrickpherish road? I use the road a couple of times a week and theres often up to 20 caravans out there and fires lighting by the side of the road.

Theres quite a bit of new housing out that way. Anybody who bought out there cant be too happy. Surely they are not going to leave them there?

I recognise the names listed in the link from RTE, from court cases in the papers, and AFAIR those names popped up in various cases dating back 3 years, so I'd assume there is ongoing hostility between the parties involved, and it's all erupted over. Time the gardai stepped up and actually sorted out the trouble. Not a year goes by without some huge week-long drama involving travellers in Waterford, whether it's raids on sites to recover stolen goods or trying to stop huge fights breaking out.

I was passing the courthouse a while back when that case involving the young traveller girl who was hit by a car was being held, and there was about 20 cops standing at the gates of the courthouse barring a large group of travellers from gaining entry to "sort yer man out", so they stood around outside at the park walls taunting, was pretty intimidating to have to walk past.

I remember hearing that Waterford has the largest traveller population outside of Dublin, surely something should be done to address the issues that arise from this. And if laws are broken, prosecutions should be pushed to the full extent of the law. Seems to be a sense that there is one law for the settled community, and another for the travelling community. I'm fairly sure if I parked a camper van up in a carpark and claimed it was my way of life, the cops would not be long about moving me on or prosecuting me.

He was interviewed about this and was quite impressive I have to say, usually local councillers when asked on air about this sort of thing play everything down and suggest its a passing squall of no consquence wheras he was very "straight" and did not seek to suggest it was not as bad as it is and the potential fall-out.

they are unfortunately Deise families and probably known or at least heard of by most Waterford people

in other gossip, i was out picking up the missus from the airport (work) on Tuesday night and there was 2 Hiace vans in the parking lot with a gang of Travellers waiting for the last flight from Luton. Thankfully whoever was supposed to be on that plane either wasnt, or somehow evaded being seen

Two new Waterford arson attacks probed
Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:11

Two more arson attacks in Waterford city in the early hours of this morning are under investigation.

No one was injured in either attack, which gardaí say is the sixth arson attack to take place in Waterford since Saturday.

One attack happened at a house in St Herblain at around 1am but the house was vacant at the time.

The other incident took place at Manor St John sometime after 3am and it is believed the house may have been wrongly targeted.

These latest attacks are believed to be related to the ongoing fued between two families that erupted on Saturday in Waterford.
