Il Giornale: Beggars are earning €100,000!

Yes, that's true. €500 a day can earn a beggar in Italy, said on Sunday Il Giornale an Italian newspaper. They also said that begging for money is a huge business controlled by crime organizations. Most of them are Gypsies but not only them. Begging is really good business not only in Italy but also in rest of Europe.

Dino Pistolato, a pastor working for the Caritas said: "Giving money to the beggars means giving money for underground organizations which means nothing else but crime organizations." He also made an appeal to all tourists and citizens of good will to transfer some money into charity organization account rather than give it to beggars pockets. "Your money can be used for crimes in the future" he said.

Pistolato has investigated 30 beggar's favorite places in Vince, he found out that working 3 shifts a day, those places can bring about 10 million euros a year!!

So people of good will, think 2 times before you will give some money for the beggar next time.

i gave 2 euro to a begger at the ATM across from the olympia there on friday.
I think the smell of his own sh1t that he was sitting in, is enough for me to think he earns every penny of that 100k

i think the point of this is that the criminal gang gets most the money and not the actuall beggers!

Exactly. My father told me one story after reading this article yesterday. That happened years ago in Rome, not Vince.

Some beggar asked him for money at railway station in Rome. He said that he need to buy some food for his kids 'cause they are very hungry blah blah.. My dad didn't give him any money but bought him a bag of food and said "that's for your family". Guess what that beggar did... He threw everything into my dad and run away!! That inspired me to put that info here.

funnily enough my nan was telling me a similar story of a young Irish girl begging for money for a cup of tea on o'connell bridge-when my nan bought her the tea the girl went mad basically sayin wtf would she want tea for!
in that case i'd say she wanted money for drugs!

Pretty possible.. I decided to do not give any money to beggars in the future. Now I prefer give it to SPCA or other organization..

iv heard that before in the big beach resorts apparently begging can be very very profitable like there was a radio interview with a french guy years ago(prob 8 yrs ago) who travels the world during the winter on the money he makes begging on french beaches during the summer

i would imagine its the vast vast minority that do this and if they can make a 'business' out of begging they are probably smart enough to make a business at something 'legit'

Brits has realized scale of problem during the Hong Kong was under their control. They made giving the money for beggars as the offence there. So if you will ever travel to HK and some beggar will ask you for money, be aware of the fact that you're gonna be arrested there.

In New York on my brother's Stag Night we were approached by two middle-aged black homeless people. They asked for money to get some food. So my brother's friend tells 'em there's a pizza place across the road, brings the 2 over there. One gladly takes the pizza slice while the other walks straight out.

I don't think I'd have the guts to do something like that.

Oh, one thing that annoys me is when the beggars sit outside ATMs. Really makes you feel sh1tty when you're withdrawing money. The banks should ban it IMHO

I remember seeing a documentary about beggers in London.

One guy had a house and would dress up (or down, as the case may be) and head to the business district.
He would make £400 a day and this was in the early 90's.

Nice work if you can get it.

I've seen disable people working very hard every day and even though that was hard for them, they were still smiling! Why the able guy cannot move his ass to work?? He's just too lazy, that's all...

I lived in Italy about 10 years ago and there were always loads of beggars around. They would kneel on the main street with their hands out and a sign saying 'I Am Hungry'. They were always very well dressed and and very clean, the italians do not go for the scruffy types, would be more likley to spit on them than give them money.

I always thought it very strange beacuse none of the beggars ever looked in the slightest bit homeless. My suspicians were confirmed when shopping one day in my local supermarket, and i spotted one of the beggars getting out of his new mercedes with wife and two kids in toe, going to do the weekly shop.

Weird country.

I do not agree with many Il Giornale articles, but this time that was not Il Giornale investigation, that was Caritas investigation. Caritas is independent church charity organization. Why shouldn't I believe Caritas?

EDIT: Il Giornale was not the only newspaper who quoted father Pistolato. That was just the first one (Sunday edition), that's why I chose to quote that one.

So in short - beggars are a competition for Caritas. That's why you shouldn't believe them in this matter.

WOSP is the biggest polish charity, started back in 93 by one guy - Jurek Owsiak. Few facts, not to bore you - they collect just once a year, always on first Sunday of January, money they collect always go to the sick children, and since 1993 they collected over 70 million USD. Every summer, they organise few days long open air gig - something like ******, but it's completely free, to thank people for volunteering and contributing. At the moment it's a biggest music festival in Poland, all the bands do it for free, there is never any trouble there, it's good craic basically.

Beacuse there is a bit of a rock & roll vibe around the charity, the church, and Caritas in particular, started attacking it few years back, with usual nonsense - satanists, drug dealers etc. The main message though was - you should be giving money to the church not to the Antichrist from WOSP.
