I've always wondered what the story was with these. So you see someone breaking the law and say 'Stop, this is a citizen's arrest' or whatever, they tell you to go fcuk yourself, and you do what exactly???

Cregan immediately called for the six to stop. “I am placing you all under citizen’s arrest. Do not move” he shouted as the stunned men came to a halt. After assuring the men that they were not in jeopardy the peace activist made an emergency call to Ennis Garda Station. Cregan called for the Member in charge to send a van to pick up these awol soldiers but Garda O'Sullivan’s response was less than helpful. The deskbound officer was more interested to know if they were armed or their commander in chief George W Bush was among them. Mind you he wasn’t so funny when reminded that that all emergency calls were recorded.

Depends on if the crime has been committed or if the person is in the middle of it, on how sure you are that it's a crime being committed and how important it is to you that you stop the person.

years ago, a youngfella from our area robbed an armful of stuff from the back of a truck that was making a delivery to the shops. he legged it down our road and was hiding in one of the neighbours gardens. the oulad scully came out and grabbed him by the scruff and says "you're under citizens arrest" and the fella turned around and loafed him in the head. that was the end of that citizens arrest.

I don't think the citizen arrest has any substance here in Ireland, and even if it did, i dont think it would change any situation. Your always going to get a hit from someone who doesn't want to be caught by someone of no authority.

When I was a kid there were some theives being chased through a shopping centre by the security, a bit of shouting, my mum trying to yell at me to get me to get out of the way, and in my confusion I ended up triping them up as I ran out of the way in the wrong direction with the security landing on top of them shortly afterwards.

Think that counts as me aprehending some criminals, even if there wasn't much intent to be so "heroic" on my part.

thought that it was just in the movies? im sure if i went up to some "wan" as she was doing illegally and said "stop this is a citizens arrest" im sure that would go down reeeally well.

Well as far as I know you can't 'arrest' someone but if you see someone performing an obviously illegal act you can tackle them or apprehend them or whatever and then call the guards.

When you think about it really that's all the power that security guards have in places like shopping centre, the right to hold someone who they suspect has performed an illegal act.

Citizen's arrests are pretty much a moot point if the arrestors do not outnumber the arrestees, or are not armed. Since this rarely is the case, CAs are equally rare.

Besides, these days an honest mistake "He was beating the crap out of the woman on the street, how was I to know she gets sexual pleasure out of public masochism?" is likely to wind up with getting yourself sued out the arse, so it's just not worth it.

Or even "He was in the process of conducting an armed robbery of the supermarket with a shotgun. I disarmed him by battering him with a baguette and then sat on him 'till the Gardai arrived. He is now sueing me for excess force, a small cut caused by a flake of crust, and psychological trauma"

Have you ever considered the potential civil liabilities of such an action, especially if the suspect is injured while you are tackling them?
