Top ten must have songs for weddings / parties

Im getting married this summer, and a friend is doing the DJ for us, but I just wanted to know what are your must have songs for weddings or parties...
not necessarily romantic love songs, im looking for suggestions of songs like 'come on eileen', that we all cringe about, but when you've had one or two are the best songs ever!

Nearly every song on that list bores me to death because I have heard them a million times at every party with a professional DJ I have been at... I'd almost avoid them because they're used so much.

EDIT: That would really depend on the crowd at the wedding though, a few pints in them and they'd prob love this list.

Jesus! TACKVILLE ! I would actually give this list to a DJ and tell him/her if they played any of this junk they wont be getting paid :eek:I could live with the Bee Gees, but the likes of 500 miles & Amarilo make me want to find the nearest exit.

But as I said in my OP, it is not a definitive list. You know the saying, 'One man's meat is another man's poison' ! I have played these songs at many parties and always have at least half of the guests up on the floor. I'm sure that if we all made a list, we would get people saying the same things!

Each to his own, and I must admit, some people have said where are the R & B songs like Sexyback, In Da Club, Rihanna etc? I have the list as a playlist, and drop newer songs into it.

At the end of the day, it's all about judging the crowd and playing what you think people like. If people leave the floor, I just switch genre.

Doing my own DJ and these are already on my list.

You have to be ruthless with the dancability though I'm finding.

We were thinking about Killing in the Name of, but I don't think the room could take 50 under thirties screaming "**** you I won't do what you tell me!"

A couple more we have are:
Guns 'n' Roses - Paradise City
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
Blur - Song 2
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

These are to be interspersed with the likes of Neil Diamond and Tom Jones. Who doesn't love a bit of "hands touching hands" when they're out of their tree? Oh and 9-5 seems to get people moving also.

We're doing our own dj too, and starting with the classic fifties, with Sinatra etc, move into the 60's, 70's, 80's and finally 90's and 0's. All dancing songs no slow ones except for at the begining. Watching all the "best of" on the MTV channels helping us with the link.

The first lot suggested by the OP are those we have pretty much banned.

I presume you will have some mixing software for these songs because I have been to weddings using an mp3 player and it takes an age for a song to end and the next to get going, something a dj would cut out for you. If you can get your hands on virtual dj the cue points can be preprogrammed so that the songs automatically mix into the next at the point you require thus getting rid of boring intros and outros etc. I'm not fishing for a job just offering some freindly advice. I am currently working on a playlist for my wedding in june which I will pre-mix into 20 minute segments and a mate will keep an eye on things or change to the next one if it's slowing down.

I like that idea!! would take the pressure of our friend, and allow him to enjoy himself too.. Can you recommend any virtual DJ software? Will you use a regular CD player hooked up to the room speakers?

As I am a dj I have all the equipment and will be using my laptop connected to the speakers. It could be burned to cd though but not all hotels have decent sound systems. Virtual dj is the name of the software and i got my copy with my
usb dj console. There's a more basic version called atomix mp3 and also a free software I haven't used called mixxx.

If are looking at mp3s and you don't want to get into DJ software, there is also winamp + SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading plugin...

We used that at a friends wedding recently and if you have your playlist done beforehand, its a simple and quite well working solution. We actually left it pretty much unattended and the only real concern was differnt volume levels of the some songs...

free software mp3gain will assign the same decibel level to a group of mp3s for you. It's easy to use and problem sorted

Hey Sweetie, have you noticed in Nero when you burn a audio CD you can select 'normalise all tracks' I have used it a couple of times and although it takes longer to burn, (as it calculates the levels first) it works pretty well.

iTunes can level your tracks as well. It's takes fupping ages though if you have as many as I do.

It can also fade the tracks together. You still need to crop some tracks though. We want to play Layla, but lets face it, that outro is blooming ridiculously long so we have to chop the bugger.
