Red lights at level crossings

Hi, my brother ran a red light at a level crossing yesterday. Not a reckless guy at all but was stressing over something and only realised what he was doing as he sailed past it and was totally freaked out after about how dangerous it could have been. Was talking to a friend about it today who said that cameras at the level crossings are monitored and that he can expect penalty points and a fine. Does anyone know anything about this - are they monitored by the gardai? Will he definitely get points?

lol - nothing to worry about. I have done this dozens of times, as I used to live in Sutton in Dublin, and I was burdened daily by the gates at Sutton Dart station & also on the Baldoyle Road (and Burrow Road!) - yes, we're so lucky, we get 3 sets within 300 yards of each other - I usually speed up if I think I can make it, as for some reason they find it necessary to put the gates down about 2 hrs before the train is due, so I'm usually not up for that wait.
Nobody is monitoring sh*t, except an Iarnrod Eireann schmuk watching a camera for safety reasons to make sure he doesn't put down the gates on top of someone or their car - your "friend" is just a jackass trying to make your brother worry.

It may be an offence to do it, but nothing will happen because there was no Garda presence. If your "friend" was telling the truth, I would be banned from driving in Ireland - and I have never gotten any points. Fear not, padewan.

I wouldn't worry too much about points etc, I'd be more concerned about the other penalty of jumping a red light at a level crossing. - DEATH!

In my experience, this is only because the gate is timed on the speed of the train at the moment it hit the sensor. If there's a station between the sensor and the gate, you'll be waiting a while.

This doesn't apply going the other direction, however.

Whilst your comments on penalty points may well be correct, it's not penalty points I would be worried about were this to be a standard practise for you. I seem to remember saying something about terminal stupidity last time a thread about getting hit by a train came up.

The reason why the gates go down 2 hrs before the dart comes is so there is enough time for stopping distance for the carriage if some tool is stuck on the tracks.

Well, if the timing mechanism is off then the gates won't close til it's too late. I live in Sutton and there's been problems with those gates before.

The only problem with those gates is they stay down by mistake when the train has passed. There has NEVER been a problem with someone getting hit by a train because of the gates not going down in time! I lived in Sutton for 27 years!

And I've lived here for 29 years and still do. There may never have been a problem with someone geting hit by a train, but there have been problems with the gates. They're dodgy as f*ck.

I hate level crossings. Gates come down about 10 mins before the poxy trains turn up!!!

Yep it gets bigger if you ignore it for a month.
