If the kid has the kind of mental health problems that involve him ransacking OR and possibly delaying vital surgeries then i don't think he should be allowed on the streets anyway.

What is mentioned in the article is that he was pissed out of his head. That might possibly be the reason. Mother seems like a decent skin though; looks as if she needs to be protected from him just as much as anyone else.

No, you're right, he shouldn't be but our Goverrnment should be dealing with him adequately and making sure he's getting whatever treatment/medication he needs. If he has to be confined to a mental health facility for that time then so be it. If he has mental health problems then jail is not the place for him.

I don't have much in depth legal knowledge, but I'm going to assume from the forum you moderate that you do.
If he did have mental health issues, under 18 and somebody whose mother has freely admitted she can't cope with then shouldn't the court have not given bail and had him put into temporary care.
The above may be all speculation, but facts remain facts, somebody who puts 4 operating theaters out of use should not be allowed to walk the streets regardless.

Don't get me wrong I despise knackers but so many of the Daily Mail Reader viewpoints you read around here are ultimately just dumb. It is AH I suppose. Next thread that comes around I might just join the rabble.

the thing with a person like this - and I'm not defending his actions - is that really he's our collective child. Lets say that this kid was born a bad 'un - he could have been straightened out. No-one, and particularly not a child - is bad beyond redemption - in my eyes anyway. If school didn't suit him, he could have learned a trade, or joined the army or something, to give him a bit of focus and, basically, something to lose by going on drugs, or on the rob or whatever.

I know that the VAST majority of people from his background turn out fine, so his upbringing isn't an excuse, but you have to admit, it's probably a reason.

His mother might be a scummer, or she could just be from the same kind of chaotic backgound herself, and just not have the skills to turn him off the path he was on. I think we all know at least one willful child who has their parents in submission, we all know it happens. Maybe the scale of potential badness that he was exposed to is greater than it would be for a middle-class kid, so that's why the fall is further.

Either way.

If someone had intervened earlier in this kids life, maybe he wouldn't have wasted it. He's pretty much painted himself into a corner for the rest of his life, and possibly it all stemmed from one or two bad choices he made when he was 15 or something, and who hasn't done that?

Again, I'm not defending what he did, or painting him as a victim. It just seems to me that in this country, it's easier to punish (and badly, at that), than it is to rehabilitate. I'm a bit ashamed at that.

I despise scumbags too, yet if I say "no, violence isn't the answer" I'm a "bleeding heart" or the really insulting ones "PC" and "a liberal". By the way I know I'm a liberal - that doesn't insult me. It reminds me of a John Barnes interview I saw in which he said "Why do people call me a 'black bastard'? I'm more than well aware of the fact that I'm black. You're not insulting me if you call me black..."
What I'm not is a bleeding heart - a liberal can be moderate. Not all liberals are bleeding hearts. Learn to differentiate...
Anyway, on topic, the guy in this story is an absolute little bastard. Is he responsible for what he did? Of course he is. Is his crap life growing up an excuse? No it isn't. Look at all his peers who don't turn out like that. Should he be punished with state-sponsored violence? Absolutely not.

I would disagree with this. I believe public humiliation would be an effective deterent to crime. Being locked up is seemingly honourific, but make someone look like a complete eejit infront of their friends, they'd lose a lot of respect.

Id imagine they werent around after the one night of drunken passion. And children arent born wasters, blame the upbringing and the parent(s).
