at a rough guess i'd say 3-4 euros for the lot. They are only worth what somebody else is prepared to pay you. There's still lots of those coins in jars/cupboards ect all around the country. unless they are of very good quality they'll never be worth much.

The only one that catches my eye is the 1941 2s6d coin

The rest are more or less scrap metal.

Otherwise, get yourself down to Georges Street Arcade, there is a coin dealer there.

The 2s6d might get upward of 5 Euro, since its 0.833 silver and relatively scarce, but the rest are common enough, even if a few missed being melted in the early 1990's when the 5p and 10p were reduced in size.

I have a pound coin from 1990 and it has a milled edge .... Is it worth anything??? An edge like an old 10p.

In the mid to late 1990's, the Pound Coin with the milled edge could fetch IR£10.00 from a coin dealer. With the Euro coming along, this variety is quite scarce. Its estimated that 1 in 100 coins minted had this flaw.

The same flaw occured in 1994, 1995 and 1996, and I did not observe any after that. Working in a betting office during the late 1990's meant I was able to get my hands on a few of this variety. I have 6 left at home in Ireland. The rest were sold when I needed money occasionally.

Off the top of my head, this flaw would fetch 20 Euro. This is up on the 1990's amount. Also, do bear in mind that any kind of Irish Pound soared in value within 2 years of the Euro changeover. My expertise in these matters tends towards the banknote side of things however. The fact that the Irish Pound was a stable currency, that held its value fairly well, and the state did'nt go mad on the printing presses meant that the notes are scarcer than most other countries. The IR£1.00 note for example can fetch 5 Euro in mint condition.

there's only one millenium pound coin, the one with the viking boat on it.

the other one your are thinking of (the 1987 one) is a 50p coin.

Which kind of Pound note

The Queen Maedhbh (Famine Victim lookalike) Pound note will fetch up to 5 or 6 Euro, depending on date and condition. Variants from the 1970's are relatively scarce now. Later versions in circulated condition, you will be lucky to get 2.50 to 3.00 Euro for these now.

The Lady Lavery, traditional Irish Pound, can fetch anything, put up the serial number, date of issue and condition, I can make a rough guess.

Any tears on the note, and I mean any, will seriously ruin value. They can be worse than penmarks.

Surface damage to the ink and paper, will also have an effect.

To get anywhere, notes have to be in very good condition, close to mint condition to hold their value above and beyond inflation. Plenty of people keep a few from a changeover and find their value has decreased beyond inflation. There are notable exceptions to this rule in Ireland. Ploughman Pound notes, in any condition are extremely rare.

i was just wondering if anyone would know the value of some old coins i have. they are from 1916 and 1917, they are both english and irish, if anyone knows could they pm me as in not entirely confident in how to use boards,

The Millennium 50p piece was dated 1988 (not 87) to celebrate the Dublin Millennium. The Millennium pound coin was to celebrate the turn of the millennium in 2000. Neither are worth much more than their face value. There are however cased Silver proof's of the Pound and Cupro nickel proofs of the 50p especially released for collectors by the central bank.

Milled edge pound coins are worth around 20 Euro as mentioned already. This error was noted when the first batch of pound coins were released in 1990, it was in the newspapers at the time that the central bank was trying to recall them. However the problem kept happening in later years right up to the last one which was the millennium coin. The coins were first milled, then in a separate process had a security engrailing added, some however didn't go through the second process.

1986 20p's aren't worth a damn either, this was the first year that these coins were released so typically they had a huge start off mintage. Just like 1928 and 2002 had for new coinage. However if you had one of these 20p's dated 1985 that would be a different story. Before this new 20p was to be introduced in 1986 the likes of Telecom Eireann were given a handful to calibrate their phone boots and make sure they would take the new coinage. These "test" coins were minted and dated 1985 and are now worth in the region of 10 to 15,000 Euro. One of the ministers for finance (I think it was actually Charlie McCreevy) found one in his desk and gave it to the museum.

I'm afraid not, these are quite common, I'm assuming it's Hibernia with harp. Unless it's in absolutely mint uncirculated condition.

with someone holding a branch. Looks like its British!

That someone is actually Britannia herself. That's the British one and theres also an Irish version with Hibernia and Harp. Unfortunately these are all pretty common I'm afraid, so unless they're in Mint condition they aren't worth a whole lot.

Contrary to popular belief, the chickless pennies are not a variety, as in the dies used where not different to the ordinary ones. The missing chick was a result of worn dies in that particular spot. I can prove this as I have many of these with varying degrees of the chick disappearing. In other words from different stages of mintage as the dies were wearing down. However for it to be truly chickless the beak of the chick to the right of it must be missing. This is were the dies were at their most worn. Value for these fully chickless is about 5 to 10 euro depending on who you can convince.

The 1940 penny is the scarcest of the dates, however value ranges from 3 euro for a toned mediocre condition to anything into the hundreds for uncirculated ones with original lustre remaining. Value of coins is based mainly on their condition.

Of those dates you mentioned, the answer is not if they are worn which they usually are assuming they have "average circulation wear". Again it's all about condition. I don't specialise in English but of these pennies some dates of value to note would be the 1902 low tide variety, 1950,1951 and 1953. Oh and the 1933 which you could retire on, but don't expect to find one

thanks for advice blade, i had previously phoned a coin dealer in liverpool for help, he has offered me £50stg for 1942 chickless coin. should i take it? clotsie

I'm very surprised he's offered you anything at all without having a very close up look at the coin. It sounds like he hasn't a clue to be honest. This chickless effect happened more so in 1968 and 1942, so he's assuming the 1940 chickless would be rare. He'd be right that this would be rare but personally I doubt this coin is truly chickless like in my description above. I would need to see it to believe it as I've seen many people on ebay advertising these coins as chickless when they aren't. As I said theres different degrees of this effect. If you can get me a very good close up scan or pic of the missing chick area, I'll tell you. Either way £50 is a good offer.
