Need help quick. My friends have flaked out on me and I'm left with the option of missing a gig or going on my own (gettting tickets at the door so money not an issue).

Is it weird going to a gig on your own? You don't talk that much anyway but seems somehow socially awkward. I've got an indie taste in music and I'm finding as I get older it's harder and harder to find people to talk go with.

The gig starts in 45 minutes. Opinions please.

Only gone to a couple of rock / metal gigs - Was at the back for one and it did feel a bit awkward...Depends on how independant you are.

Was at the front for another and it was grand - pushed around by crowd, in the action, etc

I've never understood that mentality. "I want to see this band but I can't cos none of my friends will go...". You're going to a noisy gig, you can't talk to your friends, what does it really matter? Besides, if you get lonely at the gig, you know 1 common interest that everyone there has! Strike up a conversation.

Hell yeah. It always seems to be the same for me at festivals.
I usually give up trying to see where people are going to and just go on my own.

I've built up a fair collection of 'new friends' (saying that makes me sound like a 6 year old, dunno why) due to going to gigs on my own because of my friends appalling taste in music. Nothing wrong/weird about it. Also means you can feck off home if its a bad gig and not have to hang around for people, etc.

Have gone to 4 day music festival on my own before, camping and all.
A friend of mine went around the US for 7 months going from festival to festival on his own. Its not weird if you can talk to random people and have a laugh with em.

If you enjoy it, why not go?

I do it all the time. Most of the gigs I go to I go on my own. Considering everyone there will have at least one thing in common it's easy enough to start a chat/have a pint before/after the gig with some randomers.

In recent months I've gone to see Muse and Interpol on my own and not a hope of me missing live acts like that just cause no one else would go.

Went to a gig on my own before, and actually much preferred it to going with friends, since I usually feel bad for dragging someone along to my "weird" gigs. If there's a confidence issue there sure a few pints would take care of that!

And it was fine, the only mistake I made was going early (well at door opening time) because I needed to buy a ticket first. So there was actually a bit of awkward hanging round Whelans (it was for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, ironic!). Bumped into a friend of a friend who was on a date so didn't talk to them to much as could see they wanted some alone time.

Once the gig started everything was grand. Got talking to a few people very briefly, asked a guy about some vinyl he got signed and talked to Whelans photographer. The gig was great and I'm definitely glad I went. More people should do it and if you see another lone gigger, say hello.

Don't know if I'll get any stick tomorrow off mates for going alone, they know I'm a mad music head and this kind of behaviour is to be expected.

And to ikkiepoo2: Why would I be Taiwanese?

i go to the willie clancy week festival on my own every year and a fair few fleadhs durin the year as well. i can only think of a few gigs/festivals where ive actually gone with a crowd. ya usually end up meetin someone ya know at these things, if not it doesnt take too much to start an auld chat goin.

I was actually thinking about going to same gig alone but didn't but it was because i was hung over. I'm in the same situation with regards to my friends crap taste in music i had a few gig going friends but we've drifted apart as a result i don;t go to gigs much anymore only ever went to one by myself and that was the flaming lips last year.... it was ok but a bit weird. I think it depends a lot on your personality.
