Not Penny's Boat

Something that occurred to me when watching "Last time, on Lost (dum dum DUM)" at the start of Episode 4x01

What if it is Penny's boat? She's loaded, and she quite possibly has employed lots of boats, helicopters and whatnot to search around for Desmond. Therefore, if some random guy came up on her webcam jabbering on about her boat, she wouldn't straight away know what he was talking about.

If this is the case, she's also unlikely to know the name of all the staff on the boat, ie. Naomi, though Naomi would know who she is, being the ultimate boss lady.

That would also explain why Hurley thought he was wrong to follow Charlie's advice and split from Jack?

Could be...but remember we're supposed to be getting 2 more seasons out of this. And if I know Lost I don't think it's going to be as simple as "Oh, it is Pennys boat after all!". Although, it would explain why Hurley apologised to Jack for going with Locke.

Wouldn't make a whole lot of sense dramatically. I think Penny explicitly stated that she didn't have a boat, also.

Maybe there was another reason why Hurley apoligised for going with locke, maybe Jack will ask him again to chose a side. After all Jack knows that Locke is gone

^ No Penny said it herself to Charlie in a video conversation (for want of a better word) when Chalie was in the underwater hatch in the season 3 finale. He then wrote it on his hand and showed it to Desmond. Desmond doesn't seem to bothered though...! In season4ep1

he didn't speak up about it not being pennys boat. After all he was the one in there with Charlie when he drowned. Did anyone see which side he chose? Locke or Jack?

he didn't choose a side i think he just stayed about in the middle, ya never really seen who everyone went with but i'd say he went with Locke

The thing that bugged the $hit out of me about this was, as soon as Charlie hears that it isn't her boat, the whole angle turns to one of grave danger, and when Desmond first informs the lads on the beach, its all doom and gloom.

So the fcuk what it wasn't her boat! Its A boat, and I think that any sane person who has been through all the crap that the losties have would still be delighted that some form of contact with the outside world, and possibly imminent rescue, is on the horizon.

So often I feel the writers are lazy and do bad jobs of playing certain things out. Sometimes its just mind numbing that the charcaters go along with everything and don't express any curiosity or question things.

Another example was when Naomi left and there was two trails of blood. If I was Jack in that situation I would be thinking out load and saying to Kate, why the fcuk would she leave two trails of blood, this makes no sense, she has no reason to distrust me or you. Instead, the audience is expected to jump right on board with the writers rushed script.

well you have a point and i think thats why you see some people going with Jack cause the chance of going home is more important than the chance something dodgy is going on.

But I think the reason for the doom and gloom is that Naomi had presented herself as being someone sent by Penny to find and rescue Desmond so when they hear she's not some obviously get suspicious.

I know, and I can see the logic of characters feeling that way if the dialogue was fleshed out and it was discussed. But the writers simply having them choosing sides with no apparent objective argument or thought as to whether the boat presents any clear danger.

Its staggering to believe that so many characters would dismiss, with such a whim, a decent chance of rescue, when the whole objective of the last 3 seasons has been for them to get off the Island.

I see this lazy writing so often in Lost that it mes it difficult not to get frustrated when watching it.

I would still be asking questions, trying to think of rational reasons why she did that. If I had been stuck on that Island for so long, I would be fighting tooth and nail to come up with a reason why I shouldn't dismiss outright the only chance of rescue that has come along and is likely to come along for the foreseeable future.

Ideally they should have discussed it and asked more questions but obviously with Jack and Locke at each others throats and Hurley and Claire highly emotional over Charlie's death that all went out the window. The boat people were coming, they didn't have time to take a vote. Just because the characters aren't behaving rationally in that moment doesn't make the writing lazy.

I agree. no-one has ever said to Locke "why do you think we shouldnt leave" or "why should i go with you and not jack"

I get what charlie mchugh is saying..he just isn't giving a very good example. I think that scene was played out well.

A lot of them actually don't want to get off the island full stop. Ok well not a lot, Locke. But you also have people like Rose and Bernard (even though they chose Jacks side) - remember Rose was 'healed' when she came to the island.

But apart from them, yes you'd think people would be desperate to get on a boat and go home after all this time but I think that scene was played out realistically. After all the crazy sh1t that happened on the island, I would be very wary that Penny made it clear she didn't know who Naoimi was and that it's NOT her boat, especially after Naoimi claimed she was part of Pennys rescue team - she even had a photo of Desmond and Penny with her. I would definitely be asking questions. Apart from that, Charlie has just DIED. They're very emotional about that. Hurley, Claire etc. would go with Locke out of loyalty to Charlie alone.

So I don't think that particular scene was writers being lazy but I do agree that the writers are lazy when it comes to realistically how characters would act to certain things. Can't really think of major examples now but I remember thinking all throughout season 2/3 why the hell don't the characters talk to each other about the hatch/others/other crazy things that have happened...

I doubt anyone feels like having a chat with Locke after he just killed Naoimi! Most fans of the show are actually on Lockes side and think Jack is just annoyinh but if you think about it, he's the one whos actually acting realistically. I know if one of the survivors who I've been living with for the past while just threw a knife into one of the (supposed) rescuers back and killed them, I'd be pretty p1ssed too.

Because knowledge is power and on a mysterious island where money and valuables have no meaning the only currency is information. I mean Ben knows more than anyone and he's probably the most powerful person on the island. His knowledge allows him to manipulate everyone which ensures his own survival.

In Ben's case i understand your point, as he does use his knowledge to keep people in the dark and manipulate situations to his own ends as much as possible - but with regards to the losties, knowledge is only powerful when you use it to your advantage. In most instances, the secrets kept have been to the disadvantage of everyone. I can't think of an instance where someone keeping quiet about the crazy stuff they have sen has lead to them being in a position of power over the group.
