Pronunciation of "Giovanni"

A lot of us are going to be saying this name over the next few days it seems, so as an Italian speaker, can I be allowed up onto my linguistic high horse and tell people how to pronounce it, if not correctly, at least acceptably?

It's "Jo-VAN-ny"... OK? Not "Jee-oh-VANny".

If you can hold the double "N", then you're really getting it right, but the main thing is that you don't pronounce the first "I" at all. It's just there to tell you to pronounce the "G" as a "J" and not as a hard "G" (as in "go").

RTE Sports department, please take note...

If you think I'm being OTT, that this all doesn't matter, just ask yourself, how used you feel when Maggie Thatcher would refer to our "Two-shock" as Charles "Hockey"?

Surely,,now surely, you don't expect the average irish soccer follower to pronounce that mans name correctly.

Surely you know that that body of people invariably pronounce 'Italian' as'Eyetalian' won't be arsed pronouncing poor auld Giovanni's name correctly.

In fact,you can be guaranteed,no,stonewall guaranteed, that they will use any pronunciation other than the correct one that .

My guess is Giye-o-vanny FTW:D

Well it wont really matter cos if he does get the job, which we will know at 6.30 this evening everyone will probably be calling him "Trappa" anyways in the same way we apply nicknames to most people in football, so make way big Stan for Trappa and dont bother with the Gio Van knee

I knew an Irish Italian called Giovanna, fairly sure everyone pronounced it the "incorrect" way. Cant recall her saying her own name, hmm....

Maybe its an Italian regional thing. For example, for some bizarre reason alot of people in the Cavan-Monaghan-Fermanagh area (particularly older people) always pronounce the name Hugh as "Q". People known as Hughie are known instead as "Q-ey"!
