Hi,

I am going to NY for 6 days at end June-am happy to stay out of town in New Jersey perhaps. Can anyone suggest a good hotel or apartment for a family of 4 adults. Place with pool ideal.

Thanks for all the help. Was it safe enough to hide your money in your luggage? Bit dubious bout doing it but dont see another option. Wouldnt like leaving everything behind the check in desk.

Well I didn't have a huge amount of cash on me, just used my credit card and there was an HSBC atm across the road so used that to get cash out when I was there with my AIB card. I put cards and money I didn't need that day in amongst my clothes along with mp3 player and laptop, everything was fine but depends on who's cleaning your room I suppose. I would recommend bringing a small padlock. Most of suitcases and bags have an internal zipped pocket so you could put everything in there inside the case and lock it up. My boyfriend brought all his money and cards out all day but I was nervous in case he lost them. I would use the atm's over there and take out money as you need it and put extra money on your credit card so you're not carrying too much cash around.

As mentioned there's one on 5th Avenue which is very loud and very dark and it gets really busy. The one in South Street Seaport is just as good, it has all the same stuff but it's not as loud and the lighting is a lot better.
If you're going out to Jersey Gardens theres an outlet out there too (it's only $10.50 to get there and there's lots of other shops similar to Abercrombie & Fitch out there).

I am going to NYC in a couple of weeks with my wife and 14 year old daughter. If the weather is very cold is there a shop like Great Outdoors where we can buy warm clothing? My daughter likes A&F clothes and we will be heading for one of their shops are there other similar brands too?

It's not as cold as it sounds since there's no moisture in the air so it's not like here where the cold gets right into your bones. I didn't really feel cold at all expecially as you are walking everywhere.

American Eagle have a shop on 34th street and Hollister are based on Staten Island I think, maybe someone else can confirm this!

Hollister are actually owned by A&F, they're clothes are exactly the same but a little cheaper (not much though).

Everyone has North Face Jackets so they should be good.... They've an outlet store in Woodbury Common...

Yes, there are no Hollisters in Manhattan. Hollister is almost exactly the same stuff but maybe 30% cheaper.
Abercrombie also have a new shop called Ruehl but it's not in Manhattan yet either. We went out to Garden State Plaza Mall in NJ and got to go to a Hollister and Ruehl.

Aeropostale is another shop that your daughter may be interested in. The Abercrombie and Fitch stores in New York only sell adult clothes (although their sizes are quite small so depending on her size they may fit). There's an Abercrombie outlet in Jersey Gardens (also an Aeropostale and American Eagle Outfitters, full store listing here)which is the teens version of Abercrombie and Fitch, the stuff is practically the same, just cheaper, I got a few tops there for only around $10 each.

Edit: The shops in Jersey Gardens are much brighter than the two in Manhattan (but they still play the really loud music and spray a LOT of perfume).

Hi, I will be in NYC in May and we are staying in this hotel. It's on 8th avenue at 39th st. The hotel itself has good reviews on trip advisor as it only opened for business last year however I read in a travel guide - mini rough guide, that this area is kinda bleak and as it's near the Port Authority Bus Terminal it attracts the wino's and nutters!! Anyone familiar with either the hotel or the general area of 39th st

I stayed on 39th street... between 8th n 9th ave. Was nice n quite, right around the corner from the port authority. Its grand around there... There's nutters everywhere in new york.

Quick question folks. With flights back to Europe typically in the evening after 6pm, what do people here do with their luggage (assuming they've checked out of their hotel by noon)?

Do you haul it about while visiting some more shops / museums, etc.? Or is there anywhere handy to leave it for a few hours?

leave it in the hotel, most hotels will let you do this for free or for a small charge. I usually ask for a late check out as well, don't always get it but handy not to be rushing around as I'm a last minute packer!

Most hotels will take care of it for a couple of dollars per bag.

Generally all hotels will have a left-luggage storage area. Any hotel I've stayed in has this facility. Probably cost a few dollars per bag. You can come back at any time to pick up your bag.

I stayed at one of the other Helmsley's in New York (near Grand Central) and it was lovely. Good staff, clean spacious rooms and central.

Got a good deal for it on expedia at the time.

I will be in NYC in May with some friends and we are all in our mid twenties.We know the door policy on bars re ID and being over 21 is strict but we don't want the hassle of carrying our passports at night in case we lose them. Would they accept an Irish driver's license even though they will look so fake to a New Yorker! (laminated pink paper!!) Why can't we be issued with something like a credit card with a photo like most other countries!!
Any tips on what's the best ID or just bring the passport?

Jaxy the Garda I.D is a laminated card and they wouldn't accept it from my cousin and she was 24 at the time so I'd say have your passport as they are extremely strict.

I was wondering why the flights to NYC are so expensive Easter week? I got 2 flights for 900 in November . Now they want 1400 for 2 of us return? Is it always like this at this time of the year because that makes it nearly 3000 for flights and accon for 5 nights.
