I'm not too sure I'd trust a pretty much unknown brand drive with 1TB of data, particularly when it could be pretty dificult to follow up on a guarantee with ibood... :-/

It must have a known hard drive manufacturer inside the case.
There are only 3 (isn't it?) companies that can actually make a 1TB drive.

4 on komplett. Seagate, hitachi, WD and samsung. All of which are near or around the 300e mark too, so this is still a great deal. i've ordered one anyway, would be a crime not to at that price.

I nearly ordered one of these earlier today, but decided not to after reading they have TWO 500gb disks acting as 1 TB - isn't that RAID 0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels#RAID_0) - no speed benefits to speak of, and two hard disks means double the chances of failure, but I am no expert in these things.. so don't take my word for it!

Pixmania's Maxtor 750 gb for €139 looks slightly cheaper per gb of storage space, but its no good for someone who really needs 1 TB storage.

€255 for USB and Firewire
€265 for USB, Firewire and eSata

All are Western Digital MyBooks so might be worth the extra €36+ to some people.

Dabs.ie also have 1TB LaCie's for €235

While there are definitely speed increases when using RAID-0 you certainly won't be able to take any advantage of them over USB2.0

If it is indeed setup this way I would steer clear, 2x the chance of losing all your data.

I was thinking it looked a little small for a double drive box.
It doesn't say anywhere what hardrive is inside the box though....

accepted. you do owe me a clean pair of pants tho, I was sceptical at first of the price, but I was sure I'd checked it out thoroughly and you got my heart racing for a minute there!

anyway, back to the drive itself, it looks like it's the Western Digital one, simply from looking at the 4 1TB drives available on Komplett, it's the only one with a 16mb cache, the rest of them have a 32mb one which possibly doesn't bode well, but meh, in my own case at least it's being bought for (mega) mass storage, not speed.

Handily enough, it's the only one out of the 4 drives listed with its sound output, which is 24 dBA. hardly 'silent' as the blurb on the trekstor site suggests, but it'll do for my purposes.

I'm half tempted (at that price) to buy 3 more, ditch the cases and use them in a nice 4 bay NAS. I've been guffing on about getting one for ages, so I really ought to do it rather than waste another disk on unprotected data.

I plan to do the same but I'm holding out till the summer when the
prices should be down a good bit. When is a 2TB disk due.

PS bought this 1TB from iBood. Great Value.

Was suprisingly easy.

i reckon it'll be a good 12-18 months before we see 2tb drives, but who know's. I'm sure there's some sort of formulae for working it out somewhere on the internet.

Saw that advertised in the sales for about 130ish euro. Didn't see any in the shop though, they must've sold out fairly sharpish.

FYI, it turned up thursday and I have it plugged into my PC now. it's all good except for the euro power adapter with a seperate (airport style) euro to UK adapter in the box courtesy of ibood.

thwe drive itself isn't too noisy, about average imho.

only downsaide isthat formatted capacity is 933gb, so 67gb of wasted space.

meh, still it's a nice big drive.

Nope, that is unfortunately and oddly correct. Really shouldn't be though. They do 1000 * 1000 rather than 1000 * 1024 and always have done.

yep, i know it's right I still just feel cheated tho even if I never had the space to begin with.

incidentally, komplett have a few 500gb USB disks under 100e if you have more modest storage needs.

Also, I left it on for 24 hours idling and it did get pretty hot, so now I just leave it off if I'm not using it.
