New Meteor Ad, is this what Irelands coming to?

Anyone seen the new Meteor Ad.

The one where the old woman is invited to a christmas party and because she only brings the hosts a tea cosy she is refused entrance...

I personally found this ad sickening, that the season of giving, being kind to our fellow man and visiting with family is accepted now as only being about how much money you can spend and who you can spend it on.

I understand this ad is tongue in cheek, but it was the fact that Meteor are saying that the only thing our old relatives and friends are good for at christmas is giving us presents. It was the fact they used an OAP as well, who wouldn't have the kind of spare cash lying around to buy her whole family Mobile Phones.

Personally, not having any grandparents since a young age I would rather just to be able to see them than expect them to be forking out what little money they have to provide me with gifts which I could of easily afforded to buy myself.

I would love to talk to the wise ass advertising executive at Meteor that thought this ad was a good idea.

Surely saying 'it's just an ad' is a valid opinion? And relates to the topic? If we were only supposed to agree with the OP then what would the point be?

I like the Meteor ad and I thought the Joe Dolan one was brilliant. They are all tongue on cheek, there is nothing to get upset about. (The 92 year old lady in the add obviously didn;t think it was too bad or she wouldn't have done it!).

At least Meteor make adds in Ireland that are relevant to the Irish. The others just make adverts on a global basis and stick an Irish voice over the top. You will see the same Vodafone adverts in Spain, Italy, Germany and there is nothing remotely interesting about them. That I find annoying.

After a few protests like yours the ad has been removed.

And I rarely agree with Gerry Ryan (RTE) when he said of people protesting at this ad "Get a life", but today I'm in whole hearted agreement with him "get a life".

The point the ad is making is that u should give ppl presents they actually want, like phones, instead of stuff they'll never use, like tea cosies. There's another ad on the radio where an uncle turnes away his niece because she doesnt give good presents. So its not picking on old people. They probably thought it would make a funnier ad, to have some1 turning up with a tea cosie. It's not real, i dont think many old ppl would be offended by it.

I think it's a good ad -
People are talking about it...For one reason or another
It ties in with their campaign this Christmas (the other ad that they ran was "What's happened to" and lists a number of stereotypical crap gifts)

My grandad died only a couple of weeks ago - no chance of a tea cosy or phone eh?

And I do understand that Christmas can be a hard time for people with difficult circumstances but then all ads would be removed - Expensive items make people who can't afford it feel inadequate, Valentines day, etc, etc, etc...

Christmas has gotten to be incredibly materialistic - as a lecturer recently said; more people go shopping on a Sunday than to Church...Shopping has become a religion. Meteor have used this in their advertising campaign.

Oh, and I actually think last years ad was good - it was only November ffs...Reasonably they could have started it in October in line with other shops promotions and decorations! Though it was played too frequently.

I hear* their next ad is going to have an old Nigerian man married to a young Polish girl, saying 'happy holidays' to eachother. The santa in the background will be of Asian descent and there will be a disclaimer at the end similar to 'terms and conditions apply, no animals were hurt, blah blah blah....' and then it will finish with 'get a f**king life and a new meteor phone'

TBH the only add that annoys me is the blatent manipulative one for about domestic violence that has a pair of kids doing the roles of their parents. every time i hear "lets play mommies and daddies" i switch over. ****ing misandrist ****e

Im glad the ad has been pulled of the air, as it means i wont have to endure it for the next three weeks.
I like pointing and laughing at old people just as much as the next person, but even i found that ad particularly mean-spirited.

I fully support Metors campaign to end crap Christmas presents. They finally convince our relatives that it isn't acceptable to give crap presents and that they must be in the amount of € 50 or more to be good! And if they don't I will also throw them out door, whether hail or snow, until they come back with a present that acquires my tastes!

Well the tits that went and complained got their way. Just read in the paper.. Meteor has been forced to pull the ad. Nice one.. now if you lot could put in the same amount of energy you do in complaining, into actually doing something constructive that benifits us all... like getting us cheaper broadband.. or banks that open *after* 4PM...

myself , hubby, the kids and my 70 year old mother loved the ad. especialy the "stuff your turkey line". cant believe poeple complained about it.

Have to agree, there are far better crusades to put your time into than a tongue-in-cheek ad. Obviously we all sit there with x-ray equipment before admitting any older rellies & nobody has ever had a present from an older relative that they didn't appreciate - humour bypass....much!
