pubs, advertised on the radio

has anyone else noticed those pub ads on the radio, just advertising pubs in general, and how great they are.

never heard this before......... the vinters must be taking a hit due to either the smoking ban, or high prices........

i mean, it's like advertising "shops" or "cinemas"

The ones I've heard are advertising Dublin pubs specifically. I'm not too surprised they're resorting to doing this. Its a clear indication that sales are lagging. Personally I think its because they (Dublin pubs!) charge way too much, combined with how much cheaper buying drink from the offi has got.

yeah they cant advertise tobacco or gambling but they can have ads telling you to go to the pub midweek.

yeah heard them a while ago, doesnt dara o'briain do one??

Overpriced drinks, smoking ban and clamp down on drink driving have contributed big time to pubs losing sales I would guess! I still go though

The only thing thats bad on that list is the overpriced drinks. I'm glad theres the smoking ban and the clamp down on drink driving.

ye, that's the one, there's a couple of others too.

i couldn't imagine the same sort of ad being alowed on tv.

They do advertise pubs on the TV though.. Johhny Foxes, thats the one on that mountain, isn't it?

i guess my problem with all this is that it's not advertising a specific pub, i think johnny foxes angle is the didly aye, heighest pub, irish dancing fiasco.......

where the other ad is just advertisng going to the pub, i think if this was on the tv, there would be complaints

Every second add is one for Guiness or Bulmers or Budweiser...!!! Did you never notice them either???

Every medium, and every street corner, is riddled with ads for alcohol. And then people act surprised when we hear that we're one of the highest consumers, and alcohol-related illnesses are a huge drain on the health service.

I can't see consumption rates going down if we banned all advertising, though. Considering as a nation most people go to the pub to get pissed, not to have a few beers and socialise, no matter what the ads say.

No they don't seem to affect consumption, but perhaps attitudes to drink would change in a few years if we didnt see alcohol advertised at every major event and every major occassion in this country. Maybe it wouldn't "go without saying" that you're gonna be drinking before and after a match, if there weren't Guinness ads plastered everywhere, or if football wasn't part of so many alcohol ads.

Just a suggestion, cos I don't know the answer. But it would certainly be a start, if people actually give a sh*t about changing the alcohol culture we have!

Anyone remember the run up to the smoking ban in March '04 where your pints went sky high in price and stayed mostly ever since?

The pubs blamed the smoking ban despite the fact pub drink consumption was going down BEFORE the ban due to high prices at the time and still is.

The majority of the smokers I know are happy with the ban as it has turned smoking into a social event in itself for some.

Simply banning advertisement wont change much. You need to change our attitude as a whole, which is near impossible. There's this whole social stigmata with social drinkers in our society. We have a drinking culture, no, worse than that; a binge-drinking culture. And this can only be changed over generations if anything.

The greatest pub/club ad on radio ever was for Mangans nightclub in Cork. It was basically a guy saying Mangans as often as he could in the 10 seconds it was on!

Yup Yup - price, alternatives, bans, and driving. It's a wonder they didn't see it coming sooner.

So if they want to keep their punters or attract old/new ones in, in my opinion its time to revamp the notion of what makes a pub.

So what makes a pub for you these days? Is it the food? Oh god theres lovely food in some of these..... or, is it the atmosphere, the smoking area, clean jacks? Crisp pint in a chilled labelled glass???

I found this one pub down the way in Carlow cant remember the name, across from the dominoes: the place was just cozy. Not a half bad front lounge with a pool table, then inside youve got real cushy bench seats with the digital poker game built-in to the table and out in the smoking area they even have Real Furniture - none of that finnicky picnic table crap - you can have a cigarette on a couch again! A comfy one at that. Mmmph!

All said though who the hell wants to pay 4.50 for a pint? not me, sir. not me. I say bring back down the prices and bring back the customers.
